Satellite Dish Location

My Satellite Setup
Don't have any yet! Still researching!
My Location
North West England
Good afternoon,

Thank you to all the people who contributed to my previous topic. The information has been assimilated and I am keener than ever to set-up a motorised satellite dish! On the advice of Wod, I am posting this topic which will hopefully establish the feasibility of a dish being put on the house. Any help is again, very much appreciated.

I have tried to get some satellite images of my location in order to give you a viewing of my surrounding. The images below all have the satellite selected as 28.2 E.

A bit of background; unfortunately, the house is not mine and therefore, I am not at liberty to plonk a dish anywhichway. Furthermore, the owner isn't convinced on me installing a dish at all.

Considerations for aesthetics are therefore vital (Not for me, I think a whopping dish is a beautifu site to beholdl!) and therefore will be the deciding factor in whether the project is greenlighted or not.

Sat1.jpg shows a general overview of the area and my initial location for the dish.

Sat2.jpg is a zoomed in view of the house with the current location of our SkyHD setup.

Sat3.jpg is the same as Sat2 but with red lines indicating limitations and the green lines obviously indicating viable locations. The blue circle is my initial opinion of where the dish should be located and ideally on that side.

Some criteria are as follows:

- Minimum visibility of the dish (even though a Penta 85 would look the bees knees!)

- Minimum visibility of dish 'popping up' over the roof, should it be mounted at my suggested point.

- Satellites I require are from around 30E through to 30W. I have no inclination to look beyond these at this point.

The questions arising are things like, can I feasible mount a dish as high or perhaps slightly higher than the roofs highest point?

Can I mount lower? I.e. with the dishes and and a slight elevation allow me to conceal it behind the highest point of the roof and thus leave no exposure from front view.

A bit more information on location:

Latitude: 53.5638°
Longitude: -2.5013°

*OR*

Latitude = 53.5641, Longitude = -2.5016
Lat = 53 degrees, 33.8 minutes North
Long = 2 degrees, 30.1 minutes West

Thank you in advance for reading the above. O-zzzU-zzz

If you need any further information, I am happy to disclose. I may perhaps get some photographs of the house proper if they'll help, when i'm home from work tonight. Will also calculate the roof pitch which will most likely be the crunch figure in all this. :-DOH!

Ta!

I think pictures at ground level would give a better indication of where to mount the dish boothuk.

No problem. I will take some later.

Hold back your replies! :)

As suggested earlier and re-iterated by satelliteman, here are some pictures of the house. The fourth image is actually of next doors side, but it gives an idea of the area I have to work with as the left hand neighbours house is ahead again.

Hope your able to match these images with the satellite pictures posted originally. If you need any more info, let me know.

Thanks.

Given the info supplied, I'd be inclined to mount the dish as shown in the attached. Should have no problem with 28e through to 30w.

Is that ok then? Baring in mind that wall is roughly West facing. Will the roof not obstruct the view of the Eastern satellites?

No, it'll be fine. Can see where 28e is from the picture of the front view. Looks like there's enough of a clearance.

You could mount it on the front side but was just giving you a discreet option.

Maybe one of the others might advise.

Ahh that's cracking news!

Hopefully they will then I can get this project on the ball.

Thanks.

How big is your rear garden?

I cant tell from pics

Maybe possibility to mount there?

The short answer is not very big. There's no way the dish would clear the house elevations without it being on a huge mast...

Satelliteman's suggestion looks like it would be OK, you can check it with an angle meter or a minidish if you are not sure.

The northern gable end would give a better view, but access looks very difficult.

Have you made any measurements at the bottom of the back garden? How do you know there is no way it would clear the roof? I have done a few discreet motorised installs in a very similar scenario and got over the roof no problem.

Again, you can take a sky minidish out there and check.

(My calculations based on the information you have provided, suggest that the bottom of the garden will give you a view over the roof)

Is it possible to take some ground level pics from your garden?

As i am inclined to agree with Robbo-maybe wrong but i think it possible may go there. If it would it will be discreet-keeping the owner happy and also would be nice and easy to work on:)

The rear garden is bordered by conifers, and not really big enough to mount on or near ground level anyway. I can take a couple tonight so I can give that option.

By the 'Northern Gable End', do you mean the left side of the house, like I suggested in the first post? We're able to move fencing panels in order to get access I think...

Thanks for your help.

Edit: I will try to get some dimensions and photo's of the back garden after work.
