Satellite finding

I have a question. (Using enigma image)

How do you distinguish between satellites? Do you have to scan, then whats found and then match them up online?

Also the signal bar on a dreambox, will it increase no matter what satellite is inline with the dish? For example; if i have thor selected on the menu and I inadvertently line up with a satellite a few degrees east or west, will the signal level on screen still increase? or will it only increase when thor is inline?

That is certainly a method that is used in the absence of more sophisticated equipment

I do not have a dreambox but with my stb when on a satellite I get a signal strength and can peak that by minor adjustments, but unless a working frequency FEC and SR are input then the quality bar is zero. As soon as those are corrected the quality bar jumps up and i can scan for more channels. If I try and scan without achieving working settings then I am not able to scan a transponder and the stb returns an error message. The dreambox may be slightly different but the principle will be the same. So to answer your question, yes if the satellite you are actually looking at contains a working transponder utilising the same frequency FEC and SR that your stb is set to then yes it will still increase.

In previous years as I use a modified wiper motor to move my dish, I used to use the BBC world frequency on Hotbird to move around the arc as it was utilised over and over again on many satellites some in the clear and some encrypted, but I always knew where I was on the arc.
