My Satellite Setup
I have a humax fox free to air receiver and a PIXX ADT 1200 free to air
My Location
England
Replacement for my Humax TN8000 which has stopped working. I am very confused by the satellite receivers I see online as they seem to be mostly for receiving UK channels and have features such as recording. I watch TV5Monde France Suisse Belgique and my satellite dish is trained on the Astra Satellite. I cannot remember where I got my Humax from but they seem to make different types of receiver and the more I look the more I lose confidence as to which would be the right type. Can anyone help me please?

Any current day HD FTA satellite receiver will be able to receive the unencrypted TV5 Monde France Suisse Belgique, do you have any requirements for specific functions?

you even get two versions of TV5Monde 1)fbs and 2)europe
,mostly with different programs. Both on 19E,but different frequencies.
Now,tv5 europe has white letters (tv5monde ) 11538V22000

and tv5 fbs has yellow letters(tv5monde) 11934V27500

Thank you Rodscha. I have no specific requirements as I do not know what is available. My receivers so far have been basic with very poor instructions and just allow me to receive. There are other French channels that I could watch but the interface is poor so I usually stick to TV5Monde France. I don't like TV5Monde Europe so much as the programmes are not so much to my taste. HD FTA receiver. What does FTA stand for? Which website would you buy from? I cannot remember where I bought my last one - cannot see an email though I don't delete emails like that. I see there are so many free to air sat for UK channels. Some on Amazon say you need a satellite dish so I am wondering if these would be the right ones. I have the satellite dish I just want to buy the replacement receiver without making a mistake. I am really confused. Looking at the Humax website it is very unhelpful but I see this
HB-1100S Freesat HD TV Satellite Receiver Freesat HD TV Satellite Receiver. Is this the right thing? Grrr It was not so difficult last time I bought one. I am no longer getting sound with the old one and the people who set up the new TV say they think it is caput. I don't care but if I have the right satellite receiver I can get the intelligent guy who sets up satellite TV free to air Astra satellite and he will sort it out. Please Rodsch can you advise me?

I don't know why I am getting adverts inviting me to "Meet Women From Ukraine Today". Seems a bit inappropriate for me.

I like to record from TV5Monde and have a DVD recorder for that purpose.

HB-1100S Freesat HD TV Satellite Receiver I see that on Amazon this is only available reconditioned not new. I would very much prefer new. Humax do not seem to have one which is available new.

I have just read that Humax no longer make this type of satellite receiver.

Go to a shop selling electric appliances.
Ask for an FTA(=Free to air) receiver. If it gets the UK channels it will ALSO get the FTA channels from Astra (TV5Monde ) and France 24 and LCP and BFM )plus all German channels .
If you want French channels, when you' re in France get a TNT sat ,It comes with a card inserted.
works on Astra 1(19E) ant you ll get ALL french "tnt" channels for about 120E /4 years card +decoder
bring back to UK & connect to your sat dish.

Careful!! forget Fransat,different satellite!!

FTA = free to air / unencrypted. Don't buy a Freesat branded receiver as setting up and viewing non-Freesat channels is not particularly user friendly.

The Humax TN8000 seems to be a TNT Sat receiver, were you able to receive channels such as TF1 and France 2? If yes and you'd like to continue viewing them a TNT Sat receiver may be the best choice. To continue using a DVD recorder the satellite receiver would need to have a SCART output, some receivers may not allow simultaneous HDMI and SCART output or limit the HDMI output resolution when also using SCART.

Thank you Rodscha, I live in Cornwall which is probably like living in Brittany in France. There are one or two electrical shops which sell the satellite receivers for those who want to buy a receiver so they can watch the UK channels that way for some reason. However these shops do not sell receivers suitable for receiving channels from the Astra Satellite. The outlets are awash with the freesats for UK TV which I don't think they were before. I am despairing - even when I lived in London I had to go online to find the right box.

Thank you Ozumo. I could receive various French channels but some were encrypted. TV5Monde France Suisse Belgique was the one I watched all the time. Humax are not making new receivers of this type but it seems I can get a reconditioned one from Amazon. Is TNT a make? I could not find this on Amazon.

TNT is the service provider, much like Sky or Freesat. The Humax receivers I can see on Amazon are for Freesat so will not work with TNT channels. The receiver you linked to on Ebay will work out-of-the-box as it is designed to to receive French/TNT channels from Astra 19.2°E, initially for 4 years, after that a replacement card will be needed for encrypted TNT channels.

Thank you Ozumo. This is really very helpful. With the Humax there was not time limit whatsoever. Do they automatically supply a card after four years or do you have to buy one? I am happy to do this but have never had to do it in the past 20 years or so and do not know how this works.

I can see the same set on Amazon ttps://www.amazon.co.uk/STRONG-Satellite-HD-Decoder-TNTSAT/dp/B0C2GD7LW8/

After 4 years I believe you have to buy a new card, currently around £50 from a UK supplier. I don't know if it's always been time limited but it now seems to be that way for all new installations.

Having the receiver delivered by Amazon should at least make it easy to return if it is not suitable for your needs.

Thank you Ozumo. I think I will go for this as it will arrive tomorrow and it is easy to return things to Amazon. You have been really helpful as has Rodsha. I was feeling really distressed as it seemed to have become such a difficult problem. Thank you for your time and help.

I hope what you get from Amazon will work. Even a 2nd hand HD FTA receiver will work!for tv5 monde that is.
For morechannels ,the "tnt-sat" device does the job, easy to buy in France, with a 4 year valid card inserted. 35 channels.
Again, the easiest is,when you visit France (cheap with Ryanair) ,go to Darty or Fnac or Cultura(Leclerc) ask for the TNT -sat device. Fit an adaptor when in UK....You may use another FTA device,it will get you the rest of Astra 1(19E):TV5monde,BBC news ,cnn,Germany,NHK China etc....just use an LNB twin...
