Hello,

My current antenna and receiver are recently no longer able to receive NHK Japan. They broadcast in digital format and they advise me to purchase a new antenna with a diameter of at least 1.8 meters (!) and a special digital tuner and smart card. The antenna should also have an LNB (Low Noise Block Converter).

See NHKワールド・プレミアム

Now my question is :Since this antenna is extremely large: is this allowed to be installed on a normal roof?
Where can I buy this (I usually see 150 cm as standard).
Are there other options to receive NHKworldpremium with a smaller antenna?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Hello,
I had assumed that when JSTV closed they would simply replace it with NHK WP but apparently not. Very strange. Indeed, you would need a large dish and the problem is that the satellite is close to the horizon in the UK which means that your line of sight to the satellite needs to be excellent. It’s very tricky conditions. It seems like the channel currently isn’t broadcasting to Europe easily. I would hope that changes soon. However, it seems like they don’t sell direct to the consumer as they mention selling to businesses and other providers.

It can be received throughout Europe, but requires a C-band set up.

A 1.5m dish is the minimum size, with a good LNB. In your favour the frequency is resilient to poor weather conditions.

I think there is an IPTV stream of both nhk channels on Freeview, you have to pay a sub for premium though. Or you could use the NHK app on a fire stick.

Scrap the idea of the fire stick app, it appears only offer NHK world content and not the premium channel.

Never mind the receiver at the moment - you need to think about the practicality of the dish. You do realise just how big a 1.5 / 1.8m diameter dish is? It will need fixing VERY firmly - maybe to a flat concrete patio or roof? If it needs to be pole mounted at ground level you are going to need a significant amout of concrete to secure the post, lots more if its an exposed location

Now if the channels are on 68E then the satellite is only a few degrees above the eastern horizon do you have a COMPLETELY unobstructed view out to a flat horizon out east / south east?

If there are any houses / apartments in that direction - forget it
If there are any hills - forget it
If there are any trees near the property - forget it
if you live in an apartment complex or similar then you are going to have to get permission from the management organisation

From previous posts Stevey7 appears to be in Belgium, the NHK recommended streaming service to access NHK Premium there is Toober. The one issue may be whether or not Toober provides the english audio option for dual language programmes.

It might be worth trying 58W as well

The same came up in the parallel thread, started simultaneously:

So there is some double work done, alas...

(I don't like parallel threads, without that being mentioned; as you might spoil your efforts for something that has already been discussed in the other thread without you knowing it....)

Why make a complaint over a question posted on two distinct forums ?

It's a much easier catch on 58W (for me) - the signal is watchable on 1.2m dish thanks to its generous FEC of 1/2, so you don't need a lot of signal to lock it. Also a higher elevation so less chance of the view being obstructed (but it's still low)... but depends where you are in France.

NHK World on Freeview is a composite channel and although it is available on a Freeview box, it is via streaming, not terrestrial transmitters.

It is available only on the most modern TVs/boxes as many have found.

No, unfortunately. You need both the local terrestrial signal and an internet connection.
