My Location
Addis Ababa, East Africa
As I'm new to all this, thats why i'm here.

Whats the best in the way of satellite tv that i can receive in Addis Ababa.
I believe that I can get BBC on an arab satellite, but would like to know if its best to go for a fixed or motorised system to pick up the widest range of channels.

thanks

Hey Ubdai, or Salamnew, En Denha na if you speak Amharic.
I've spent many weeks in Addis, I stayed just down the road from the Sana'a Arab restaraunt.
You will get many 1.8m Jonsa or Fortec style dishes - you can see them hanging out of balconies on the flats by the Parisienne cafe, and if their reputation is anything to go by i would avoid them and stick to getting a solid 80cm dish where you may get a more reliable performance. Or bigger if you can find one..
Most of the folk I know in Addis have a 60cm dish pointing at Nilesat 7W, where you can get all the MBC movies, (and MBC Action for Top Gear and The A-Team), ETN, Eritrea TV etc which are all free. A friend of mine out there obtained a *cough* patched box from Bole Mekele area for about 1000 Birr, not sure exactly where, but I suspect you could get them from the Merkato as well (it has everything doesn't it!).

Chris

Thanks for the info. Going down to Addis in July, so will check out the lcoal markets. If *cough, cough* patched boxes are available then that would be interesting.
The sana'a arab restaurant, is that the one down the road in Piassa area.

cheers

No the Merkato (you must know that, yeah?) is up near the Piassa area. Massive open and indoor market. I remember there's a stall in the Merkato that sells satellite receivers, but you'd better ask a local, I mean the market is massive! And I've spoken to my friend in Addis, he says there hasn't been any dodgy boxes around for a couple of years, but you'll definately find basic satellite receivers.

The Sana'a restaurant is in Olympia just south of the Dembel Building. Excellent mixed Grill with Arab pitta bread. and just down that road opposite the bank (Dashen bank I think) there's a restaurant that has the best Tibbs in town!
