Dark side of the Moon was from Pink Floyd.....Good album....Remember when it came out.

I hope that was just a slip Chris....
Not that there's anything wrong with Zep ...but to attribute what was probably the first concept album to anyone other than my favourite band of my yoof...borders on profanity..

Now that's asking for a challenge!

My first thought was Sergeant Pepper which is, indeed, earlier. I looked around and found some more interesting dates:

Sergeant Pepper - June 1st 1967
Days of Future Passed - November 1967
Forever Changes (Love) - November 1967
Ogdens Nut Gone Flake - May 24th 1968
Mass in F minor (Electric Prunes) - Mid 1968
SF Sorrow (Pretty Things) - Dec 1st 1968

DSOTM wasn't released until March 1973. Draw your own conclusion.

If we expand our choice outside of Rock music then there are arguably some much earlier examples. Woody Guthrie released Dust Bowl Salads in 1940. Frank Sinatra also realeased several themed albums such as In the Wee Small Hours in 1955 and Come Fly With Me in 1958.

If I had a bit more time I could probably find some more examples.
 
See all of them are long before my time :-)

Most of them are on some of the oldies streams

I would have thought Head by the Monkees predates Floyd by a few years.

I did say 'probably' ......and I am biased ...
But happy I at least threw down a challenge..

I think "OOkkaaatt" and his friends on the log drum was a good concept album, but trying to get it down on clay tablets was a bit difficult, as they didn't invent the stylus till 40,000 years later.

Indeed. Released December 1st 1968 to coincide with film of the same name.

Two snippets about the film you might not know.

1) The script was co-written by Jack Nicholson.

2) The band named it Head so that if they made a second film they use the strapline "From the band that gave you head". Possibly apocryphal that one...
