Seeking Newbie Tutorial

Hello all,

Maybe this is in the wrong place, but I couldn't find a 'lamers' category.

I'm a newbe to the satellite world, so far my skills go as far as being able to get the dish pointing to the right bird and viewing the channels. And of course setting that up as a stream through VLC so I can watch it on any PC in the house.

Being new to this, I'm keen to learn all the basics. For example, do I need a CAM to decode channels or is there another way. I noticed that in Ukraine they get their decoders 'set up' by a local guy to receive all the channels they need for a 'fee' and this needs reworking periodically. There's no viewing card, no cam, just a small box. So I'm assuming this setup is some kind for firmware upgrade. How do they do this and how can I get the information? Does it work on any box?

Next up is how to receive several satellites at once. For the ukrainian channels I need Amo, Sirius and Thor. Looking on the Ukrainian houses, they have 3 LNB mounted next to each other, but how do I know where exactly to place the LNBs on such a bracket? I also need to receive Polish TV, so there's another 2 birds. Is there a cheap way to do this with a strange shaped dish or should I mount lots of LNBs or get a motorised system? I suspect with a motories system, we might spend a long time waiting for it to move whist we surf channels. We also have a tight budget for this.

How about decoding via the PC? Is that possible?
I would consider myself as having reasonable technical abilities beiing a computer programmer and a radio ham. I'm just new to satellite TV and need a few pointers.

Is there a tutorial somewhere to get a good start?

Does anybody live near Melton Mowbray who fancies a few coffees and a chat about all this?
