is there a lead that changes serial into usb for a laptop

Do you mean changes the USB port into a serial port, (rather than the other way around)?

What serial device are you panning on using? Some serial port things can be very picky about what they run on.

I understand that these leads come with a driver CD. Is this to generate a virtual com port so that ,for instance, a loader could connect with it? I ask this because all the loaders I have used, need to connect with a com port.
