SES Sirius launches safely
A Proton rocket demonstrated its returned reliability by successfully launching a satellite for SES Sirius from the Baikonur spaceport Nov 18.
The launch news allowed SES Sirius’ execs to breathe a sigh of relief, following the September 6 catastrophe when a Japanese satellite (JC-SAT 11) was lost. This is the first near-exact launch since that problem.
The Russian authorities had grounded the Proton rocket system until Oct 24, and the speedy return flight was generally taken as a guide that commercial flights could resume. A military flight carrying GPS satellites also took place at the end of October.
Sirius-4 is a Lockheed-Martin craft, and is the largest-ever Sirius ‘bird’. It will enter service within the next month and extend the Sirius fleet mission for SES to Eastern Europe, Russia and over Africa.
