There is only going to be one winner from this - the lawyers.

To me this all makes SES look bad. I always had a lot of respect for the Astra brand but this just seems sneaky and underhand and has tarnished the image of SES for me somewhat.

Here's an update, although not sure it really clears up much for us...

Telekom and Eutelsat settle in slot dispute
Deutsche Telekom has signed an agreement with Eutelsat that ends its part in the dispute surrounding the use of satellite frequencies at 28.5 degrees East.

Just over a month to go until 4th October and still not much out there as to what will happen.

Will broadcasters be informed if their transmissions are changing satellites? Will contracts need to be renewed or replaced? A lot of the niche/"cheaper" channels use Eutelsat, will they continue in the long term on Astra if SES take over the frequencies? I assume they use Eutelsat for a reason (cheaper uplink costs?). Has the delay of Astra 2E changed any of SES's October plans?

AIUI 2F is supposed to take over the Eutelsat frequencies which is why shes so badly underutilised.

Absolutely nothing has been said recently from either side so either its in the courts or its a done deal.

The uplink providers will certainly have to be notified if there is a change of satellite, and presumably the channel operators would have to be told as well.

To be honest this sort of spectrum grab is pretty much unprecedented

Yep, it's certainly going to be interesting to see what develops. No doubt it'll all become clearer in the following weeks.

I also assume if SES take over some of the frequencies they'll need to realign them to fit their standard frequency plan.

Yes I would think there will be some changes of frequency.

I have my doubts anything will happen in October - I would have thought something would have leaked out by now if it was going ahead, theres too many people involved what with all the channels involved to keep the lid on totally.

Your hoping solly - should 2F take over the Eutel frequencies the coverage is almost certain to become much more restricted towards the west & you can wave goodbye to dozens more UK channels over in the Middle East!

It's not particularly great news for me either in Finland.:(

I would think there will be some changes of frequency.
Standard Astra frequencies attached... and these would be 22000 symbol rate and 5/6 FEC (for DVB-S transponders), making them quite a bit harder to receive than the current Eutelsat allocations.

I'm sure it was just 11200-11450 that Eutelsat would keep. SES would take 11450-11700 and the 12500-12750 bit at the end of the band.

Could well be - whichever way round it is its barely worth Eutelsat keeping their residual allocation

Well I did joke about 28B being used for that small portion of the band...

From the press release you quoted near the start of this thread:

The agreement will give SES the right to use, on its fleet, 500 MHz of bandwidth at this orbital position adjacent to SES’s 28.2ºE in the frequency bands 11.45 – 11.70 GHz and 12.50 – 12.75 GHz in downlink and 14.00-14.50 GHz in uplink.
