Set up problems - complete new to this!

My Satellite Setup

Hello,

my apoligies if this is in the wrong section,

Basically, I work on a dive boat 12.5m out to sea around jeddah. I bought this set up-

- Dansat decoder stargold Universal single LNB 70 DB 65 cm Dish

to be used on Nile sat.

I have installed the dish and lnb etc I have been trying to find channels, but my Signal Intensity is 60-70% with my signal Quality on 4-5%! and I am not getting anything!

I dont really know what I am doing or if this system is good enough, or big enough.

can someone please give me some guide on how to get some channels!!!

Hello and welcome.

My first question is, as you mention a Dive Boat, how do you keep the dish still and stable? Any movement whatsoever will deny you reception as accuracy in both Azimuth and Elevation needs to be within tenths of a degree.
 
Hello, well that maybe my problem then, is there anything you can do do get round this? bigger dish, better lnb?

also i have a dome anttena and that does pick up, ksa 1 &2 but i need some US/UK channels.....even if its one or two haha!!

Nope.

Bigger antenna needs to be even more precisely aligned (narrower beamwidth).

Without a fully stabilised mount you will not get it to work.
 
if the dish ws not stable would i even pick up bad channels? I am not bothered about how watchable it is, as long as I see somesort of picture and sound!
 
No: As stated, you need precision to within tenths of a degree - otherwise you will miss the Satellite by a long. long way! There is no gradual loss of (or onset of) signal, just a cliff. Yes or no. Lock or not.

Is the dome antenna a satellite antenna or is it just a tv aerial?

If it is a satellite dome antenna that is designed for a boat then that should do the job as it will have a gyroscope inside to keep it stable, I`ve not personally played with one but I think it should have a device that lets you point it to the sat you want to watch

as you say you are getting 2 channels there is room for improvement
 
Unless the dish is stabilised you will never get it to work - the dish is collecting the downlink power of something transmitting from 36000km away with the power of a 100watt light bulb - any dish movement at all as the waves pass under the boat will push the dish off beam.

Imagine someone shining a narrow beam torch at you in the dark. Point at the torch and move your arm up and down. Your hand will only be illuminated for a small fraction of the arc of travel of your arm.

Thats the same principle as the problem you have as your boat bobs up and down.


You also wont get any uk signals in Jeddah - the best you are going to do is English language channels off Nilesat or Badr.
 
I always wondered - they always show Sky News on a ferry from Dover to France. It pixelates sometimes, but on the whole it works. It's Astra 2 signal as well as you get the typical "No satellite signal is being received" message on screen there. Is it some special marine, self focusing dish?
 
It will be a gyro stabilised dish inside a radome :)

On the newcastle to amsterdam ferry they show Eurosport, not sure what bird its on but when I asked the wifey behind the bar to change the channel she said it`s eurosport, news or music lol

They also had their own mobile network for people to roam on and rather expensive wifi too so I`d expect those to come via satellite too
 
the dish is now on the marina platform, nice and stable, but still no improvement on the signal or intensity. and its pointing at the right dish?

any help?
