Hi, I'm after some advice/guidance.

I'm trying to align my sky dish to 13e with no luck so far. The pictures below show my sky dish mounted on a pole above the gutterline and the los for 28.2e and 13e from dishpointer. The problem I have is the ladders I have aren't long enough or sturdy enough to get right up to satellite so I think the problem I'm having is with the elevation. I'm basically having to work from the kitchen roof you can see about on level with the back upstairs window. I can swing the pole round easily to adjust the azimuth but I have to take the pole down to adjust the elevation.

The satellite being a sky dish was aligned fine on 28.2e. I initially took the pole down and raised the elevation just a touch. The bracket was Raven branded and didn't have any elevation scale on it or even much room for asjustment. I hooked up a sat finder and opened the antenna setup on my openbox and swept around. I found that I could get a 84% strength 80% signal on 28.2e and a 80+% strength 65% signal on 19.2e which proved fine for scanning for channels and viewing. However I just can't find 13e. I took the pole back down and moved the elevation higher but now can't pick up 28.2e or 19.2e.

Is it a case of having to persevere taking the pole down and adjusting the elevation until I get it right? Is there anything I can do to make things easier? Is there anything I should look out for with regard to receiving hotbird 13e on the openbox? As I noticed when I found 19.2 the signal strength was showing for several different sats even though it was 19.2e but 13e didn't register the signal?

Think I've been bitten by the bug as I've got a strong desire to find all the satellites and channels out there. I will probably look to get a motorised set up with a better box in the future but would quite like to get 13e now without any outlay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Richy

Slide the dish down the pole - it doesn't need to be that high. Just above the gutter will be fine.

Make sure you tie the ladder to something sturdy so it doesn't slip. Also you can try aligning the dish at ground level or better yet - at the front of the house. The it can go on the wall. Much safer and less ugly too.

As the guys have said, try the dish lower down the mast, it may have been necessary to have it at that height for 28.2 East to clear the trees, but as you are swinging it around by 15 degrees, you will probably miss the obstruction and be able to work more comfortably. When working in comfort, alignment becomes much more easily achieved. :)

PS. In future, please upload images to the forum, do not link to them on image sites, as a few months down the line the images may be moved or deleted and the thread will be meaningless (as per the forum rules).

Thanks for the advice. I'll have another go tonight. Think I'll slide it down the pole just above the gutter where I should be able to adjust it easily with the pole secured in place.

If I have no luck with that I'll remove it from the pole and try it at the front of the house at a lower level where I can get to it easy but that could be a job for the bank holiday.

I'll update the thread with my progress. If I go for a motorised set up in the future would on a pole on the chimney where the TV aerial is be the best option?

You could swing the mast round and work from the small roof if safer. Ladder stand off preferred at that height :)

Have managed to successfully receive 13e. I slid the satellite down the pole so it was just above the gutter and from there I could adjust the azimuth and elevation with the pole secured in place. Found it really easily and am currently getting 80+ signal strength and 80 quality.

As martin-f pointed out I have no chance of reliable 3pm kick offs as the channels that I was interested in (JSC Sports HD1-6, +6-+10) have been removed from 13e so now I'm considering my options. I'm thinking about getting a new dish and motor as I'd probably like to switch between 28.2e/19.2e/13e and also so I can hunt around for other satellites and channels as and when I'm interested in them.

Are triax dishes any good and if I was going to attempt to receive JSC sports what size dish would be required for 7.3w, 7w, 26e? I realise that I'm not going to get perfect reception on these sats 24/7 whatever the weather but some advice on what size dish would give me the best chance of a regular signal would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Richy

What you might get and what dish you would require depend upon where in the UK you are, to some extent.

Can you give us a more precise location?

Put up an 70/80cm dish and you can have 13E / 19E / 28E easy as anything with offset lnbs. Plus possibly 23.5E if you use a thin enough lnb :D

7.3W is the only option in Newcastle - the dish sizes required for Badr 6 at 26E & Nilesat 201 are far too extreme to contemplate much north of London.

Be advised that when FAPL realise the JSC Prem games are being transmitted on a fairly easy to receive beam here in the UK theres a very good chance the 3pms will be punted off a frequency on a Mediterranean beam
