Sharing a big dish

Earlier this year I moved into an apartment block on Tenerife. Already installed on the roof was a 3.2m off set dish (directed at 28.5) with a Humax Octo universal lnb.

Unfortunately all 8 connections are in use so I have to make do with a redundant 0.9m dish and a Fortec Star uni lnb with my Pace 2600C1.

It gives me good signal/picture with everything free to air on the south beam but of course I would love to make use of that dish and get the 'full hit' from the north beam especially as it's sited right on top of my bedroom roof.

After lots of enquiries it seems a multiswitch is the answer and I've been considering asking at the owners agm in january if I could pay to have this installed with the necessary quad lnb.

This is where i'd like to ask your advice.

Would there be any signal deterioration for the existing users?, would they find weaker channels missing?.
Is it possible to buy a multiswitch that uses line power from the recievers rather than a seperate mains power supply?. It's an old apartment block with no outside electricity. I'd be happy to run a cable from my flat, but what if my mains trip switch was to 'trip' while I was in the UK, or maybe I would need to knock the power off while i'm out there. The other dish owners would not be impressed.

Welcome to satellites forum Vernon,

Correct, more than eight users, a multiswitch would be needed. A Quattro LNb (four fixed ouputs) would need to feed a switch. Ideally a mains powered active multi-switch will require a landlords supply (what we call it here in the UK). You can use a RX powered switch but the losses will be greater.

Why not set up a battery back up to help ensure 100% power continuity - if the multiswitch is already designed to be powered by a separate 12v PSU a 12v car battery would be easy and keep it going longer than you need - add a solar panel charger and you might not need any mains.

What LNB is on there now .. a C120 + feed horn or lnbf?

How good are the signals now for the 8? Do they lose 2D at times?

If you change that LNB to anything else, just that can easily cause signal loss (or gain) depending if the LNB on there now is working very well so you could lose signal with a quattro before it gets to the multiswitch.. and a multiswitch can cost some signal. Systems here usually spec an 80 dish instead of a Sky dish partly to compensate for loses. Check if there is a loss quoted on a particular multi.


You can do a search top right for other threads for 28e for that area.

Buy a Spaun multiswitch. They are the best, have the lowest signal loss (if any) and have a power saving feature.

You cannot buy better.

Thanks very much for all your advise.
Although it seems some small signal loss may be incurred, a multiswitch is the way to go here. I understand that this dish/setup gives very good performance and the signal only deteriorates in extreme conditions.
The other residents tell me that prior to this they used a 're-transmitted' or microwave aerial sytem that at best gave 70% reliability.
A thread I picked up on this site is the Slingbox. I'm not sure if that is worth looking into as a wireless broadband system advertised in my area (Los Gigantes)
is 32 euros/month.
