We could all save a lot of money on our energy bills if the energy market didn't keep bumping up the cost... :-doh

Fortunately our biggest spender moved into her own place so now lights get turned off, water isn't left running while teeth are cleaned, showers aren't 15 minutes long and god only knows where all the loo roll went. It amazes me how many people don't seem to use a washing line these days preferring just to chuck it all in a tumble drier. The only appliance I refuse to live without is a dishwasher, they could cost £20 a go and I'd still use it instead of washing up by hand.

The biggest consumer of energy in the home are what we call "Current Vampires", these devices consume electricity even when off.

things like the cell phone charger, even when the phone is not plugged into it, it will be consuming energy, not very much but it adds up, other things like the stereo system, the HDTV or anything that uses a remote to turn it on uses some amount of energy when off.

Anything with a switch on it that has pilot light in it will consume a tiny bit of electricity, when you turn your computer off do you also turn the external speakers off?? (if you have some)

If you are worried about the electric bill, and want to see what is costing you so much, then get one of these hummers, Kill A Watt Meter - Electricity Usage Monitor | P3

They have others for the UK here, https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=diy&field-keywords=kill+a+watt+meter

Get one, test your stuff, add it up and see how much these current vampires are costing you each month.

Most of the stuff I don't need to be on all the time (stuff with remotes) I have on a switch.

When we had a Utility room built outside the kitchen, I built a large airing cupboard over a small purpose-positioned radiator where all the stuff dries in 1-2 days - so hardly every bother to hang washing outside on the line, except the large stuff in the warmer weather! As for a tumble drier, we have a old, small and very basic small one (which I think is now faulty!) which we only use a couple of times a year:lol:

I'll admit to being the lazy tumble dryer type, primary reasons are I don't like a mouldy house (condensation on cold stone walls, not good!), no airing cupboard (where there used to be one is now just a cupboard, no hot tank to keep things warm), and it's wet & miserable most of the time so line-drying is quite a difficult task when the clothes end up wetter than when they went out... :-doh

In the warmer months though I do use the washing line in the garden...

Not here! - lot's of insulation (we talked about that a year or two ago :)) = warm walls and no condensation (except on the bathroom window when I have a bath!):-rofl2

I disagree, or maybe I just don't care!
Electricity in my country is not cheap at all, and if I would disconnect all 'standby' devices, chargers and turn off all LED lights all the time, I would only save like 5€/month, in fact, I would probably reach the expected on/off lifetime and I would need new lights sooner (more costly!)!

I mean, what is that compared to washing machines, water pumps, electric heaters, garage compressors, computers, etc..
pretty much nothing.

5E per month is almost as much as my gas bill.

It is true that switching off appliances can reduce their lifetime but in the greater scheme of things, each connected 'vampire' is additionally creating heat as a result of simple physics, which when added up (and not ustilised locally - by venting to the open air, rather than sitting near the device when it is doing its stuff) it is directly contributing to unneccessary changes in the environment.
