Should I go for Gemini or Blackhole ?

I will be purchasing an original MD 800 HD and would like to install the software before doing so I would like to know the advantages of Gemini vs Blackhole. Thanks.
 
Mostly it is a subjective decision based on what you like and dont like in an image.

Gemini:
Works closely with Dream Multimedia so you can expect better support. Been around a long time.
Lacks some features that Nabilo has e.g. easy EPG, but you can install E2_LOADEPG from blue panel.

Nabilo: Most important is good EPG support.

All the latest images suffer from a little bit of instability. This is in the Linux base (apparently) so is no better or worse in different images.
 
I recently moved from Gemini to Nabilo and would recommend Nabilo. The EPG is a big advantage for me. Generally I think it's slicker.

You can use BarryAllen to multiboot and play with different images. It was too much hassle for me. It takes 5 minutes to do a backup, reflash with a new image and upload the old settings. Play with it for a while, if you don't like it, flash it with something else.

Dreambox Control Centre and Dreambox Edit are very useful.

Never tried Gemini on the 800 but I am very happy with Nabilo v0.12 . I use it in multiboot with BarryAllen and Oozoone light in flash. Been using Nabilo since verion 0.06 when I got box about a year ago. That works out to about an image update every couple of months. Not bad support at all.
 
I have been a Nabilo user since Blackhole 05. They are a little slower than some of the image makers at updating their images but I found they usually have a lot less bugs in them at release.

I was running the latest Nabilo 0.12 in flash up until the weekend. Since I use a pc server now I am free to experiment a little more now with the 800. I have put Nabilosat DM800 Pure Flash Multiboot 14NOV2009, MeoBoot 0.6 in flash and have installed Nabilo 0.12, the latest Gemini and the latest PLi Jade3 on USB.

IMO the Pli is a good place to start. Sky UK EPG works very well without any setting up, CCCam was preinstalled( I think) so just need to personalize your cfg. Default Skin is hard on the eyes though, dTV-HD skin works well.

But for the getting the most from your 800 I think Nabilo has no equal.

For me guys there is no contest. Nabilo every time. I too discovered it in v0.5 and have used it since. I have 0.12 on both my DM8000 and DM800 , its fast, easy to use and feature packed. I need look no further.

in your first screen shot, how did you get all the program names beside the channel name? i have a DM800 with Nabilo v.12 and i have the epg data downloaded to the hard drive. But to view it i have to open up the bouquets screen and press MultiEPG and then i see the usual MultiEPG screen.

i would love to have it your way so at a glance i can see whats on now.

That screen grab was from the PLi image and I didn't ammend any default settings. The Nabilo 0.12 works the same for me though with the default skin. How are you grabbing the EPG? Downloading the Satmate_SkyUK epg brings in a lot more detail than the OpenTV EPG grabber from the Hip Hop channel. Not all channels show the summary, but most do.

thats brilliant, thank you! i was using the opentv grabber from hip hop but i just tried the satmate one and im in business now.

Sorry for being daft but how do i get satmate ? im using nabilo 0.11

first post as well :) ...just trying to learn...it's all confusing though. Hopefully will get there one day

Help is greatly appreciated.

Simple, you have to upgrade to Bh 0.12

Thanks for the reply mate.

i got my setup from a local sat shop...bloody rip off but worth it if u dont know much bout it....he's got me a 90cm motorised dish with a cs account....if i upgrade the image how do i go about keeping the cs account settings....is there anyway i can flash the new image and then put those settings in so it wont affect the channels i have now ?

its a dm800hd clone though :(

is 0.12 clone friendly ?

where in the image i can find the information bout the server and username/password he's put me on ? i can ftp into the box with no problems


too many Q's i know...im trying to learm as much as possible....been reading the forums for a few weeks now and have gathered a lot of useful information thanks to all of u knowledgeable and freindly ppl :)

I have a DM800 Clone and have to say that with the nabilosat image i can't get it to go online. I cna't connect to the network. Gemini or Pli connect to the internet right away.
