Is it possible to connect a signal meter to a dish without a receiver so as to acertain if I can get a strong enough signal prior to buying a receiver? cheers

You will either get a signal or not, as regards its strength it is signal quality that is more important, if you have line of sight you will be able receive freesat end of, but in answer to your question yes, but you will not know unless you have a professional one which satellite you are receiving
 
As common frequencies are used on the higher powered satellites, you would need to determine which satellite your aligned to, if using an in-line battery meter as you could find yourself aligned to the wrong satellite. A cheapo receiver would (a) supply a power supply for your in-line meter and (b) give you the option to scan transponders and check. More expensive professional meters will allow viewing of transponder data and decoded signal without the need of a receiver.
 
depends on wich meter you have if its one with its own power suply then no you dont need a receiver
if it a cheep one that fits in line between receiver and lnb no you wont get a signal reading
