Advice Needed Sky and Hispasat 30W (brand new installation)

Hi guys,

I currently don’t get TV at home, however I’m moving in to a new flat next month and will install satellite TV when I move in. The dish(es) will be located in the back of the flat, which has a clear view facing South.

I'm interested in getting Sky and Portuguese TV. While Sky is on 28E, the Portuguese TV is on Hispasat 30W. I will get an official receiver from Sky and one from the Portuguese TV provider.

From what I've read so far, it seems like I can go for either two dishes or one motorised dish. I would prefer to have one dish only, but I'm open to the opposite.

My questions are:

1. What solution would you recommend to my case?

and if I opt for a motorised dish solution:
2. Will Sky provide me with an 80cm dish or a 60cm dish only?

3. What would I have to buy on top of the equipment provided by Sky?

4. Will Sky install the motorised solution? If not, am I better off asking them not to install anything at all?

5. How much should I expected to pay for the external installation of the motorised dish?

You will not get a single dish solution - the 60 degree separation is waaaay too much.

So two dishes or motorised. If you want to use both receivers at the same time you will have to go two dishes.

Sky dont do motorised so you would need to talk to an independent installer.

Cost depends on how difficult the access / install is.

Both 28E & 30W are strong satellites so if you install yourself you shouldnt have too many problems.
 
If you are in a flat above the ground floor remember the install may be trickier than you anticipate
 
Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm on the 2nd floor, which is the top floor in the building.

I have no interest in using both receivers at the same time, all I want is to be able to quickly switch from one to the other, which I think I can do with both solutions (two dishes and motorised).

Am I better off installing the motorised solution before Sky goes to the flat or should I let them do the install and then motorise it myself/with external support?
 
Unless you go twin dish install you will need additional kit to drive the dish - Sky receivers dont even do disecq and certainly wont do motorised. The Portuguese kit probably wont either.

If you want to switch quickly between boxes then twin dish is the way to go otherwise you have to wait whilst the dish motor tracks 60 degrees backwards & forwards.
 
Ok, 2 dishes it is. Sky will sort out itself, as for the Hispasat 30W, will I be ok with an 80cm dish in London?

I get good reception from Hispasat on a 60cm dish in NW Ireland, but probably best to err on the side of caution and use 80cm
 
Yes, as Analoguesat says, 80cm is more than enough for Hispasat, in fact a 60cm dish will be fine, Sky will install a minidish, but will only work below a certain height and 2nd floor/third storey may be above that.
 
A decent 60 or 70cm may be just the job given location.
When you come to the installation; an important note, make sure you skew the LNB correctly for given satellite.

I would always advise to install a 1mtr, you never know what else you might want to look at in the future and the difference in price is minimal, but the choice is yours at the end of the day, good luck and please keep us informed :).

Do you really need Sky (ie. for sports or movies)?
Just wanted to point to that Freesat gves you all the BBC/ITV/CH4 channels without the subscrition charges, AND you my be able to get them on the same received as th portuguese channels (no need for HDMI input swiching on the telly).
If you don't need Sky, the an independent installer can set you up with Sky and 30W in one go.
@Channel Hopper on this forum could see you right in a jiffy, or at least recommend someone who can, depending on where in London you are.
