Sky + box stopped working.

hello,When I installed my HD BOX I took the Sky+ plus to to another room to replace the standard box I have for multi room.
I installed it but it won`t come out of standby.
Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Are you supplying two inputs to it from the lnb?
 
Also, please tell us Make/Model of Box.
 
How old is the $ly+ box and has it been left switched on for all that time?

In swaping the sky box to another room there is a short in the cable.it may cause it to stay in stand by.
if taking the box back to the old set up it works again it would confirm the cable problem.
the sky plus needs two inputs to receive and record. if you tried to split the signal 2 ways with a splitter it will not work and there could be a problem there as well
taker the box and hook it up the way it was and if it works that would solve everything.

Hello ralphmagno,It only had one input connected,I assumed it would work but only be able to record 1 channel.I`ll try it back at the original place and let you know the result.

That is most likely the problem as you have to configure in the menu system that you are switching to single input from dual input before you move it
 
Hello again,I tried the box in it`s old position and it wouldn`t come out of standby.After a lot of attempts I got it to work by pressing the backup button on the facia and pushing the other buttons as well.I disconnected 1 LNB and it still worked,I swapped to the other LNB and it continued working.
I looked in the menu for changing to one input but couldn`t find any reference.I took the box to the other room and had to repeat what I did before to eventually to get it to work.The next morning it again wouldn`t come out of standby but eventually did after all the button pushing.
After the box had been in auto standby,at the next switch on it did but I got "no satellite signal being received" more button pushing in random order and it worked again and has done since,going in to standby and coming on again when asked.
1) For Tivu,The box is a Thompson,I don`t know the model,I don`t want to disturb it by moving it to have a look at the plate.
2) For PaulR The Box is 2* Years old but went into regular auto standby.
3) For Topper As stated previously I couldn`t find a menu item for one input selection.
4) For Ralphmagno, A short in the LNB cable was unlikely as my original sky box had been working fine for several months.

Even though it's only two years old it sounds like the power supply is failing. Thompsons are noted for this. The "no satellite signal" message is another pointer to this.

When in standby the box is still switched on - it's just the sound and vision circuits that are not active. The $ly+ box doesn't have an option for a single LNB - it's the HD box that can do this so you can sop looking!

There are a few posts here about the power supply problem and, if you are able to wield a soldering iron, kits of parts are available. You can check the power supply by disconnecting the power lead and taking the cover off the Thompson. Keeping your hands STRICTLY out of the way look at the capacitors near where the power lead goes onto the circuit board. They are cylindrical items and the round flat top should bejust that, flat. If it's domed then it's in need of replacement (and probably several others).

The capacitors can store an electric charge for quite a while after the mains is disconnected so, as I say, keep those hands away!
 
Just to be absolutely sure - which box is the problem:-

1) The HD box you installed where the $ly+ box used to be or

2) The old $ly+ box which which you installed to replace the old standard box?

I assumed No 2 but I think Topper assumes it's No 1.
 
There was some confusion in your first post as you talked about installing the two boxes - anyway that's cleared up now so see my post No 9 above.
 
Yes PaulR I can now see now the confusion with this first post it is all down to interpretation and punctuation, but I thought a sky + unit would only work with two inputs regardless of failing caps in the PSU, which was why the option of single input was added as a menu function on HD boxes

Unlike HD boxes all Sky+ boxes will boot up with only one lnb connected to input 1, what they do not have is the option to set single feed mode to enable easy recording. That however can be achieved by my "patented" method of setting a dummy manual recording on a channel you never watch lasting 24 hours repeated daily. Once set this will allow setting of recordings from the EPG that will normally work. This dummy recording will fail but will fool the box into thinking Input 2 is permanently in use and it can only use input 1. The failed recordings do not take up HDD space and can be deleted the day after - do not delete the one that is currently supposed to be in progress.

I thank everyone again for their replies but I take exception to my original post being misleading.It clearly states that I installed a HD box and took the Sky+ box to another room to replace the Standard box I had been using there for Multiroom.
In other words,my first box was a Standard digital box(which replaced my analogue box),which was being used in another room under multiroom because I had upgraded to a Sky+ box,when they first became available.So when I obtained a Sky HD box I had to move my Sky HD box to the other room,as I did not want two boxes in one room.
I hope all who read this will now interpret the meaning,correctly.

Well, you've actually now said that you moved the $ly HD box to the other room but I don't think that's what you meant to say.

Anyway, my interpretation was correct. So see my post No 9 as I said.
 
And my interpretation was incorrect despite the ambiguity of your statement however, if that clarification of the situation causes you to take exception I cannot stop you doing that.
 
Hi PaulR, You are absolutely right,my only excuse is I have a very bad cough and cold at the moment.
Before delving into the power supply I`ll just wait for The SKY+ to play up again.
