There is a Humax HD box on the market which is, as far as I've seen, mostly branded for use with Premiere HD.

The Humax 1000 is designed for Premiere
The Huamx 2000 is an "open" model with free CI slots.

Just to make it clear once and for all, you can't get any of the SKY HD channels in on these receivers, but you can get BBC HD.

Thanks for your input, it is most appreciated. SKY HD installation is still virgin territory out here.

The SKY rep insisted the receiver would have to stay connected since SKY would ping it every 30 days or so and if there is response they might cancel the subscription. In the past I thought that only applied to subsidised receivers.

I stand corrected. The subsidised box is £399 and unsubsidised £299.

Are there any updates to these posts???
Has anyone managed to activate a HD sub abroad without a phone connection????
Is a 'callback' needed prior to an activation or not????
My plan was to buy a box and just ring Sky to activate it over the air just like always.......will this work or not????
regards
D.

Hi All,

After pouring over this forum and many others on other sites, I decided to chance a working Sky+ to HD upgrade in Marbella on the Costa del Sol. I even did it on my own after finding a cost effective source of HD boxes on ebay that are based in Marbella. I was told by the source that his boxes were registered and then unregistered in the UK and it should be simple to pair it with an existing card over the phone.

I called the Sky+ technical number and within 5 minutes had access to all my subscription channels but no Sky+ or HD. I was told that it might take 24 hours to work as I did not have a land-line to update with. I waited 4 hours and called back hoping that someone else could force an update. I dialled a different number "01506 831780" and selected options for Sky Plus technical I believe. I got through to a guy and asked if he could remove and re add my services to resolve my problem but he then took me through a procedure that got everything enabled in seconds.

I could not believe what he did but will tell you all what happened just in case it helps someone else in the future as I have not seen any instructions like he had taken me through.

Firstly he checked card, serial, model and version numbers as per usual. He then took me into LNB setup in the installation menu and got me to turn off LNB Power and 22Khz switch options save and then turn them back on and save. He then told me to do a new installation and check if pause was working. Everything miraculously was working and I was so happy I sent an email to James Murdoch saying I was a happy customer.

So the HD upgrade worked for me and it was well worth it, next a 750GB drive I think.

Rich

P.S. Tuner is way better than the Pace 3100 and may even be better than two 2600C1's I have

Bump!

Has the situation changed regarding Sky HD abroad?
Do you need to get it activated using the telephone connection in the UK? If you go for the £399 (unsubscribed), are there any complications. My standard box was bought in the UK and activated in the Shop for me... can this still be done?

Thanks in advance.

You can have HD box activated just like any other box now...or transfer your present subscription status + HD on to HD box..
if you are phone SKY for activation/transfer just make sure they dont know you are outside UK..;)

I wouldnt advice anyone buying second hand HD boxes unless they are absolutely sure it is in working order...
Plenty of early ones were faulty and they might easily end up on ebay..;)

This is the plan then... I will call Sky from here in Sweden and ask to upgrade. Hopefully they will then send the box (by post) to my address in Scotland, where my mate will then post it to me. As I now understand it, I then insert the card, give sky another ring and get it activated. I keep my fingers crossed, but this is the way I think I will go.

Hello Archoo,
I was completely mesmerised when I read your post regarding activation of a SKY HD box in Marbella as the same applies to me. Initially I had an ordinary digibox which I replaced with the HD box which I bought full price in the UK. When I returned to Spain I called Sky and asked to be upgraded to the SKY HD subscription and also to activate the account. They would not have any way but by connecting the box to the phone line. I argued with them that I have a PBX and blablabla but nada..you know how sometime they drive you up the wall!!)(-red
Anyway, can you please re-confirm that your method works absolutely without any connection to the telephone line? After the LNB & 22Khz procedure, when you request a NEW INSTALLATION on the engineer menu the box asks you if you are connected to the telephone..Do you ignore this message?
Best,
Ragheb

I have activated/upgraded many HD boxes in Cyprus lately...I dont call SKY myself but give all the box/card details to my supplier in UK..They contact SKY and i get the boxes activated..
Never had to do the LNB & 22Khz switching on/off described by Archoo.

I must make a note that the cards that i transfer or activate on the HD boxes are supplied to me by my UK supplier..

This the thing Iceman, that only the suppliers that you bought off the box / subscription can do it. However, on a similar basis to my situation I think one has to resort to other means..
Thanks for your help anyway..

Ok fellas... listen to this... Just called Sky HD. She said, you HAVE to be connected to a phone line to get activated. I asked if there was any other way, and she said no. The Engineer will bring out the HD box to the address where the subscription is held, connect the other connection to your twin LNB, and then activate it through the phone line. I said that my contract is without a phone line, and she insisted I need one!

FFS! I need to find a Sky retailer in the UK to do it for me, and one which will use my subscribers address. Hopefully they can activate from their shop! By the way, there is an offer right now for £199 for those who have had an account with Sky for longer than 6 years! I must get this done soooon!

Forget doing it through Sky, you will have to buy a box separately, otherwise they will insist on the phone activation.
