i have moved to vienna and have read about available sky channels. i have a friend in ireland i could get a skyplus box and account registered to but i am not sure will this work. do i need to have the box plugged into a phone line in ireland/uk or can i bring it to austria and use it there?

i would like to avoid paying the 250e that websites charged to register a box and card to the uk.

can anyone suggest ways around this

Yes it would work, but only if you purchased a box.

As normally when you go for Sky in the UK or Ireland, you get a free box, but have to have the Telephone line connected for the first 12 months.

Whereas if you buy a box separately, and then ask for a subscription (must be in UK or Ireland), the phone line is not a condition of the contract.

When asking for a subscription your friend must ask for a "second hand box contract" I believe.

Make sure you go for a seperate "second hand box contract" registered at your friends address. Dont try and get a multiroom contract - those need both boxes connected to the SAME phone line.

Dear Ronjon,
We think we are shortly locating to Vienna from Rome in January. Could I ask you what size dish will I need to get BBC ITV Ch 4 or am I off the beam ( so to speak ! ) I would be happy to have at least a couple of the above if all are not possible. Do I still need an address in Uk as I have at the moment or is it possible have Free to Air whereby I think I don`t need to use a Uk address ! Thanks !

For Free To Air , you don't have to have a Sky box OR an address in the UK. Any generic digital satellite receiver will be OK. The address thing, is ONLY if you want to subscribe.

i believe getting bbc and c4 itv is next to impossible in vienna. you would need a 2.8 meter dish as opposed to a smaller dish for the west side of austria.

sky channels can be recieved on normal .8-1m dish though

Ouch !! Thanks Ronjon. Any chance that my existing 180 cm dish might get the channels at least some of the time even if signal is weak ? We already have spent a fortune on 2 different sized dishes for Rome and now in the last month I can`t get Ch4 anymore so I daren´t suggest another bigger dish to my husband who is a bit fed up with my whole obsession re UK tv !!

west side here, only 40-to 55 cm for bbc!

how about ppv ordering this it work, with uk simcard over mobilphone via sms?

Sorry to be thick but I don`t know what ppv is. My mobile comes from the ark and is used as little as possible !

He is talking about Sky pay per view events I presume and ordering using a UK SIM card via a text message, to avoid being detected as being out of the UK or Ireland.

Hello issy,

i heared from the Member Astra at _satgucker Board.de_ - he gets with 180 cm not far away from Linz at the evening some programs- maybe you ask him there?

Regards Montafon Guy!

Dear Montafon Guy
Thank you for your help. It would be great if I can get some TV with my current 180 dish ! Thanks for info. Have a good weekend.
Issy

You mgiht get some channels on vertical transponders for a few hours but no horizontals. This means you might get a few BBC1 regions, and a few ITV regions, but no BBC 2,3,4. Some ITV regions are available on 60cm dishes and Sky digiboxes if set up as "Other channels". Same for Channel 4.

Dear BBC fan
Thank you for your help and the info. That is more positive than I had hoped and I was getting the same result when I was in Rome ,so at least it is no worse ! I wanted to test my sky digi box here in Vienna but we are in temporary accommodation and the flat is only set up for cable TV so I can`t test it out til we find a permanent home. Meanwhile have to put up with BBC prime!. Have a good week!

Dear BBCfan
We move, in a couple of weeks ,about 25 km south of Vienna and will soon need an installer to put up our satellite dish. The 180 dish will be a no go as we only have a small garden and it will not get me Channel 4 etc any more,so we will have to use the 85 cm one. Am I right in thinking that size will get me the Sky Uk channels and hopefully ITV and Ch 4 on " Other Channels ? " I still have my Sky subscription . I am not sure if the installer will be familiar with the Sky Uk so could you please tell me the degrees I need to set the dish ? I have read so much info I have now got myself confused ! Is it Astra 28.2 east ? Is there anything else I should tell him ?
Also as my digi box has been switched off for 3 months do I have to do anything special to reactivate it ??
Thank you so much.
Best wishes Issy

Regards Montafon Guy!

Ps: I found this List on the net:

The following channels cannot be received with a little dish ( 85 cm ) in Austria:

BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC 4, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, Sky Travel, Sky Travel +1, Sky Travel Extra, E4, E4 +1,
E!, FX+, abc1, Film Four, Film Four +1, Film 4 Weekly, BBC News 24, BBC Parl´mnt, CNBC, ITV News,
Jetix +1, Disney Channel, Disney Channel +1, Toon Disney, Playhse Disney, Disc. Kids, CBBC Channel,
CBeebies, Sky Travel Shop,

From our experience only I can tell you that in South of Czech Republic we only receive itv, channel 4, five etc , only with help of free view card from sky, but you will receive other channels from astra 28.2 and eurobird ( they are nearly the same place ) you will not receive any bbc channels though, because of tight beam on astra 28.2 d. In Brno Czech Rebublic they have 2.4 m dishes and only receive channels fo few hours a day.
