You will need to align the dish to 23.5E - which will lose your Sky signal if you watch them.

23.5E is a nice strong signal so you shouldnt have too many problems getting it.

Not 100% sure but think you need a cryptoworks compatible receiver.

buy a cam and you can use the card in any receiver you like.

A card slot/card reader lol

Some boxes have built in card slots/readers and some come with a hole for a cam to go into to read the card

Conditional Access Module - you stick the card in it and stick the cam into the cam slot on most sat receivers, and away you go.

The picture shows a Viaccess version.

How did you get on with getting Skylink reception in the UK?

I found that the Astra 3A 23.5° signal is too weak for a tiny little Sky dish, so I installed a new 100cm dish instead.
Now I get 100% signal strength and 100% signal quality :-)

Finding a receiver for receiving Skylink in the UK is a little trickier.
If you can, get one in SK and bring it back to the UK.

Is your card one of the newer ICE cards (Cryptoworks & IRDETO)?
If it’s an older Cryptoworks only card, I’m afraid it’s going to cease functioning later this month :-(

Right… if you want just low definition Skylink channels then a cheap little Icecrypt S1500C receiver will do the trick. For a cheap little box it’s full of features and a PVR.
You can get one of these off the self at Maplins for £49.99, but out of the box it won’t work as it’s setup for Conax encrypted cards.
You’ll need to install an alternative firmware which is tailored for Skylink and will accept your Cryptoworks card.

If you’re interested I can dig out the details of the firmware version you’ll need to download.

---
>> DO NOT INSTALL THE LATEST FIRMWARE FROM THE ICECRYPT WEBSITE <<
This will kill your receiver and you’ll have to recover you box using an RS232 cable.
The S1500C is a bit of a pig to recover, as most firmwares installed by RS232 don’t completely overwrite the currently firmware, so the box will no longer boot.
However after hours of perseverance I found one that will :-)

Once you have the box working again, you can then re-flash the receiver using a USB memory stick (with the correct firmware) and it will successfully erase and re-flash the firmware.
---

Once you’ve changed the firmware in the S1500C, pop in your card and start an automatic search (Networks option need to be set to on).
After a few minutes you should have all the SK, CZ and a few other LD channels available.

If you have not used your Skylink card for some time the cards software will be outdated and it will not work and encrypted channels will still be unavailable.
Don’t panic, just pop your card in the slot and leave the receiver on STV1 for a few hours (or over night) and the card will be automatically updated and bingo you’re good to go.

I’m just in the process of sourcing an HD receiver in the UK for Skylink :-)

The way I understand it is like this (please correct me if I’m wrong):

If you have a new ICE Skylink card (which can decode both new Irdeto as well as the older Cryptoworks codes simultaneously) you can carry on using a Cryptoworks based receiver and should see no difference (older standard definition broadcasts).

If you have the older Cryptoworks only Skylink card, then this will cease to function by the end of November 2012 so you need to upgrade to a newer ICE card ASAP.

IRDETO is/will be required for all new, HD and subscription based pay channels.

Most satellite receivers with a card slot can be patched to accept other cards.
I’ve never had to use a CAM on any of my receivers :-)

Just waiting for my new Amiko HD satellite/terrestrial receiver to be delivered :-)

Yes, if you’re planning to receive Skylink HD channels then you will need a new IRDETO CAM which supports MPEG-4.
SD only uses MPEG-2 so an old Cryptoworks/Skylink CAM will do.
A new IRDETO MPEG-4 CAM is quite expensive, so patching your current receiver to use the native card slot is a good money saving alternative.
It also leaves your CAM slot free should you need to install another card at a later date for another provider.

I'm in Basingstoke and was recommended going for an 80cm ~ 85cm dish by a number of Slovaks living in Reading.

As we’re about 25kms South-West of Reading and there is an area of very tall pine trees and a street light (just my luck) in line-of-sight of Astra 3A 23.5° east satellite, I went for a larger dish (better safe than sorry).

As it was only £10 more for the kit and I get 100% signal strength and 99% ~ 100% signal quality even in torrential rain, I’m not whinging :-)

The plan is to fit a motor at a later date and didn’t want to have to splash out because I required a bigger dish.

It's a shame that the Astra 3A 23.5° east has such a small footprint, otherwise I could’ve used our old SKY dish (I did try for the sheer hell of it) :-(
Instead I've pointed it at Astra 19.2°E so I can watch the ice hockey and some other stuff.
When my new Amiko 8820 arrives I plan to fit a DiSEqC switch so I can automatically switch between the 2 dishes :-)
