Looks like some Overplay DNS servers may be blacklisted by Sky :-(

You mean if you use certain Overplay DNS servers you can't resolve Sky addresses?
I helped t.m setup his Skybox and network to use OverPlay SmartDNS like I do, but it would not work with SmartDNS IP address they supplied to him. As soon as he changed it to the one I use it started working.

I have suggested he informs OverPlay of this.

He has allocated a fixed IP address on his network to the Sky box.

Normally when not wishing to reveal information on open forum but wishing to represent the fact that there is information present one puts xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx not just a randon series of dots

unfortunately this seems to be the trend lately...seems only a matter of time before they get to all of them.
looks more and more like vpn with dedicated uk ip is the way forward.

Topper, as you have quoted my post I assume I have done something wrong, but I have no idea what you are referring to.

I had loads of problems when I tried to use a VPN. SmartDNS has proven much better so far.

Sorry you have not BP, I thought I had quoted t.m's post
There is of course an ip address there
and I was inferring that the way he had posted
ip address of the skybox........................

Makes it look like there is no IP address so I was simply explaining how people often do denote the fact without revealing the address

No offence taken hopefully on either side t.m, just trying to help

Anyway now we are all chums again, back On Topic. What does this finding mean? I don't know a lot about networking, but why would one OpenPlay SmartDNS server be working with Sky On Demand and another not?

My guess is either:
1. One DNS server is transferring data through a UK IP address and the other isn't due to a config error.
2. Both are going through different UK IP addresses and Sky have blacklisted one of them.

Probably #2.

On a side note does sky On Demand content have subtitles?

Thanks

By the way, when talking about Sky On Demand HD, are we talking about this service?

Do Sky boxes show now and next events for this service? I can only see times but not titles.
I don't suppose there is a schedule available somewhere on the internet?

another smart dns provider, unotelly also supports sky go, now tv and now the sky store website. however, still no on demand on the box. i opened a ticket with "channel request". if more people add comments under the request, it'll be implemented sooner. in some respects, this is better than overplay, more customizable, more websites supported...

This morning I switched off the power in the house to install a new power socket. I have now lost my Demand via OverPlay SmartDNS. I have reset my IP address via their control panel so everything should be back to normal. However, all my downloads are now failing with 403_FORBIDDEN. So I am now where t.m was a few weeks ago.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

I do not use thia service myself. But a friend of mine, who can not put up a bigger dish had loads of problems with Sky on demand using SmartDNS. He solved the problem by using a dedicated 2nd router ehich has VPN configured on the router itself (most commen internet routers can not do that). All he now needs to do is changing his gateway address to the IP of the 2nd router which then connects to the VPN service via the 1st router (broadband access). Now all his devices work fine without connection errors.

The Sky website has a list of all UK allocated IP addresses. If your IP is not in the list, you won't be able to watch the content. The same goes for German TV when you are trying to watch it over IP outside of Germany. So, if any providers IP address is not listed or the IP allocated is from another range of numbers, it won't work. Happens a lot if you try to watch from a company network which is really owned by a foreign company with offices inside the UK but the network is listed abroad. You could the contact Sky or BBC and try to get your IP listed. This will not work with a number range allocated to a big provider like e.g. German Telekom. Their IP number range is in the public domain. If you need to find out more about IP addresses and whom they are allocated to you can use the ICANN whois server.

Thanks for your reply.

I used to try the VPN route before I discovered SmartDNS but could never get it working properly and it was slow when it did work.

I might try an alternative SmartDNS but Over Play was working fine until this morning :-(
