Hey, I'm new to all this and havn't really got a clue about digital TV, but I have got a 2nd hand Sky Plus HD box. Will I be able to connect this to my TV and use it to get any channels without having to subscribe to sky or is there anything else I need to get?

Hm, I think if you have a card, you'll be able to use it to an extent but not its recording features. That requires a subscription of some sort.

I'm afraid that in order to get the subscription channels you need to pay for a subscription. The box can still be used to receive free to air (FTA) transmissions such as the BBC, ITV etc, some of which are also in HD.

I would urge you not to follow any adverts offering "cheap" ways of getting round the subscription as these are inevitably operated by criminals. You will no redress if you pay upfront for a year and then lose everything after a month. Even worse, if they are busted by the police then records will exist which can then be traced back to you.

Yes you can connect it up and get the free stuff. It wont work for recording without an active subscription though.

Unless the OP has a blue-card-with-yellow-house that has been not been deactivated, in which case the PVR will still work... but this is unlikely.

@cornado91: this may sound stupid, and I apologise, but do you have a dish? It is not apparent from your profile. And you ask if you need anything else - yes you need a dish pointing exactly at 28.2E with LNB and cabling feeding the signal to your Sky box. And you need a card that is linked to the box.

And if you did have one of those blue/yellow cards that worked, it would not operate a DRX 890C or higher as the R11 update killed the operation. You would need an older box such as a Samsung, Pace etc.

Technically yes in some circumstances but that can be more or less ignored these days. And its only going to confuse someone who says
