sky+ stations jumping and general weirdness

Hello, sorry if it's rude to make a first post as a request for help, but I'm going up the wall to work out if it's the TV or the sky+ box.

Basically what happens is when I'm watching, the programme will suddenly just jump to either another station or more often a radio station. Sometimes I can manage to turn the sky+ box off but this seems to make absolutely no difference at all. The TV is still running all the way through all the stations and then landing on one for a few minutes before again jumping.

Sometimes the TV stays on a station for an hour or so, some times we get 20 seconds of one thing, then 40 secs of another and maybe a minute or two of something else and so on. It's like watching TV with a poltergeist with ADHD. Most of the time the controls either on the remote or the actual buttons on the box are unresponsive.

I've done a re-boot which wiped the HD and that didn't work. unplugging all the cables and replugging them in helped for a day but it's now back to its usual tricks. Given that we get the channel jumping when the sky box is turned onto standby, I thought maybe it's the TV. Because of where we live, there is no signal coming to the TV when we disconnect it from the sky+ box.

I'm really really not terribly technically literate, so any advice, please imagine I'm your 90 year old granny!

Many thanks for the hopefully forthcoming help!

Hi thanks for replying, Analoguesat

No, I think it's an amstrad.

it couldn't be the technogeeks next door using something that is interfering with it, could it?

Have you tried removing the remote control from the room ?

Sometimes moisture does get under the keypad which can make it work on its own.

Another remote control in another house is unlikely, unless there was a clear line of sight of less than 10 metres or so.

Do you have magic eyes connected to the box?

Do you have energy saving lights, fluorescent lights, plasma or LCD TV?

All the above can cause interference to the remote signals which can be interpreted as control signals.

Does it happen when someone is using a laptop in the room? I once had a laptop with an IR sender that would randomly change channels on one of my TVs.

OK, well it looks like it's the TV and not the skybox. It came on randomly in the middle of the night when the skybox was unplugged and having taken all the cables out from the skybox it is doing the very same thing, running through channels and turning itself on and off. two months outside of its warranty as well!

Have you tried removing the batteries from the TV remote?

I thought it was the $lybox that was changing channels? Or is it just the TV?
