Sky to set up new service in Spain

I was told by a Sky engineer that Sky is to start a Spanish service.
He could not elaborate, as they hadn't been told any detail.
He knew all about the action against Spanish re- broadcasters and overseas Sky agents, saying it was to clear the way for the new venture.
As yet it's a mystery what is being planned.

Well there is already a thread about this however it has been called speculative at best. It does however seem logical in some respects insofar as there is obviously a very high demand and the demise of the aforementioned re-broadcasters and agents means there is a void to be filled. Quite how they will fill this void will be the interesting bit.

Could be some truth in it, but Sky engineers/installers are not normally privy to anything above their pay grade and subject to the same chinese whispers as the rest of us.

In this case the engineer had been told by someone further up the food chain in Sky, probably in a memo or meeting, but no detail had been given.

I cant see that happening!!

Who will pay for a service that will break up when the Jan/Feb heavy rain arrives in Southern Spain.

I would have thought that if this story were true, all Sky would have to do is licence the microwave firms that have been operating for all these years and showing their programmes.

I suspect it is either:-
-a new service on Astra 1 for Spaniards, with some channels in English
-a take- over of an existing satellite service on Astra 1 or Hispasat (99% of dishes in Spain are pointing at one or the other)

Less likely options could be an official way to buy Sky in Spain,
or re- broadcasting in some form or other.
If is was the former, there would have to be an easy way to re- configure a Sky box to run normally whilst only receiving the south beam.

Or.. it could be completely unfounded, but I have the feeling there is some truth in this.
The main clues are the action behind the scenes to close down the agents selling Sky cards in mainland Europe, and the closure of Telmicro. Most reports cited tax evasion as the reason for the raids but copyright theft was mentioned by some sources. A trade source I spoke to in Spain to cited 60,000 Brits having lost their re broadcast Sky service..

Reconfiguring a Sky box to receive Astra 2 south beam in Spain is not a problem. I run such in our apartment in Spain already. Just change the frequency setting from 11.778 to 12.129. An 80 cm dish works just fine in the Torrevieja area. It also picks up most of the channels on Eurobird 1 as well.

Free films in english as well.

Murdoch did not buy Premiere afterall, so I guess Nag 3 has been delayed, possibly forever.
