I remember a while back that a Sky Yellow House card was required to pick up FTV channels such as Channel 4 and 5. Now that these have gone FTA is this card still relevant? Are there any FTV channels that this card will decrypt?
 
The yellow house card has now been replaced by the white card and AFAIK no longer works - at least all of mine don't!

C4 is FTA and doesn't need a card but Five mostly does. There is one version of Five that is FTA but that is not the version that is default on a Digibox. You have to put this in as an "other channel".

A card will regionalise your box so that you get the correct version of ITV1, BBC1 and BBC2. C4 and Five have regions but only so that you get the correct advertising - all programmes are the same.

The other encrypted channels are Fiver/+1, Five USA/+1, $ly3 and, I think, $ly Sports News.

No, part of the news package but free on freeview, don't get that :S
 
Freeview and Freesat are two different platforms and that it's available FTA on Freeview. I don't watch anything to do with sports, that's why I don't know about satellite.

I'm sure they do it to tempt people on the Freeview terrestrial package over to Sky subscription, as channels like Sky 3, Sky Sports News and Sky News are heavily laced with programming adverts.

PS. Sky sports news is subscription only and isn't in the very base package even.
 
Well I contacted Sly and they gave me a number and a link to a website _http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/. The site seems to be indicating that E4, CBS reality and Sly 3 are part of the package, however if you read the small print on how Freesat from Sly compares with Freeview and FreeSat, the information is from October 2008. They are claiming 240+ channels when compared with 70+ from Freesat. How on earth they have EVER got to a figure of 240 is beyond me.

I personally have never had a Sly box so have never had a problem picking up the FTA Channel 4 and 5. All the other channels 4s like E4, More4, Film4 are also FTA as is CBS reality. So just trying to pick out some facts, from what I've seen. The only channels of any significance which the card will give you are Fiver, Five USA and Sly 3.

I notice on the Freesat site _http://www.freesat.co.uk/ they are now officially showing Five as one of the channels. I believe the BBC were kindly allowing them to use one of their narrowbeam transponders for a FTA Five in parallel with the Sly FTV Five whilst the Sly contract is or was running down.

Depends where you are - the fta version of C5 is the default version for the macro region that covers most of central and southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

London, northern England & Scotland are on ftv regions.
 
Yes but without a card in 105 doesn't even show on the EPG**, so the version that's "right" for your area is irrelevant. Catch 22.



** unless this has changed in past 2 months or so as I haven't switched a Digibox on since then.
