Don't forget my method of using a SDHC card in a card reader. Now you can add SDXC cards for even more recording space.

The draw from them must be tiny compared to any spinning hard drive.

Prices of solid state HDDs are dropping but not fast enough. They are just big SD cards anyway and you can't use them in the camera or music etc devices so SDHC and SDXC cards are more flexible. Just make sure they are genuinely fast like Sandisk Extreme or Lexar pro.
Thanks for this, I will certainly try it, my only reservation is that my raspberry pi research has uncovered that SD cards have a limited number of read and write cycles. Actually people running PIs are turning away from the SD card slot and booting and running from a quick usb stick for better performance and stability. I will be running my pi from USB to try to increase its speed. However in this case the speed just needs to be fast enough to write the data from an HD stream - my usb 3 stick does this fine - when it wants to!

Will give it a shot though - thanks

Yes shorter life cycle is the down side. But if it works consistently it will do and you will have to hope it holds out.

I have been using my set up in my Comag SL40 HD for a couple of years on the same Sandisk Extreme card though I only make occasional recordings.

On a hardware level these small boxes are all very similar.

Solid state hard drive prices will keep falling so it is a case of holding on until they are more reasonably priced in the next year or two.

Ok, tried this and it came up as an error, so in the firmware I have duration is recording time rather than finish time.

Set three recordings today - first one failed, second ones working fine now??
I have looked closely into how I record on my usb and as I have not done any recording for a while may have given you some duff info, First off your firmware is the same as mine and the duff info was duration as you quite rightly said it is 2 hours(Default setting) so i.e. for a hour and half recording time I set duration as 01.30 Save then power of box with on/off button on remote and as I said never yet had a problem in fact I did a recording using that method this morning and the box switched itself off, I have not as yet had one that missed a recording every one I have done always to date recorded what I set the box to do,
