Yes sad indeed, I first used Skype at work in late 2004 early 2005 whan I set up two of the company branches as a trial, have used it extensively for numerous personal things since, contacting family abroad to avoid extortionate charges, alumni meetings, bad weather meetings etc, that tune seems erased into my memory somehow

Apparently those with skype credit, will still get the dialer via Teams for as long as their credit lasts. however I tend to use whatsapp now for international calls.

I think I still have some credit left but I actually can't remember the last time I fired up the program. The last time I can definitely remember using Skype was in 2012 when I was doing one of our European Grand Tours.

That only works when contacting other WhatsApp users though, surely?

I still used it very much until recently. Won't be using Teams - I have enough of that carp at work.

to many apps want a cell fone to use them yet the reason to use them is to not use a cell fone to talk. I installed Zangi. it allows calls with and without video and not turning over fone numbers to be sold on and recieve spam forever more. The Mrs can call her mam now without a
fone numbers being given.

Yes indeed, but I very rarely need to contact someone who isn't.:)

If it wasn't for Skype bridging the 100 mile gap early on in our relationship, I wouldn't be married today!

Heavy and sometimes awkward to use, but ultimately never bettered.

Same goes for Skype.

I used to use Skype a lot back in the day, most our family members even had Skype cordless phones but eventually they stopped working when Microsoft took over. I even had an actual UK phone number allowing people to call me which I'd kept over the years as a business number.

But a few weeks ago I ported out my old Skype number over to A&A's VoIP service. At £1.44/month it works out a bit cheaper than when I had the number with Skype and I was paying about £35/year. It also comes with useful extra features like voicemails sent to my email as an mp3.

You've jogged my memory and reminded me of the Tesco Internet Phone. £20 for a handset, a few quid credit and a real UK number. Seems ridiculous now but it was a brave move from a retailer who was trying a lot of new things at the time.

At the time I had a Tesco Direct discount so got a few starter packs for well under a tenner. The handsets were perfect for Skype of course!

Not an expert by any means, but the Teams (free version) looks to have blagged the contact list from Skype without much hassle.

One call so far and no delay, camera was one way but I can sort that out next time I am on site.

Began using zoom during Covid, and still use it ocassionally (once a month) as the first 20 mins was always free and I never had much to say. On a daily and weekly basis I also use Whatsapp
