VOICE of snooker "Whispering" Ted Lowe died yesterday - on the day this year's world final began.

Ted, 90, was watching TV coverage of the championships just hours before he passed away at a hospice after a 10-week illness.

Widow Jean said: "He still loved the game." Ted commentated on snooker for the BBC from 1969 until his retirement in 1996. Co-commentator and former world champ Dennis Taylor said: "I had great times with Ted. No praise is high enough."

Ex-pro and current commentator John Virgo added: "Ted set the standard for us all. He was one of the BBC greats."
