hello i just took off the case of my old unused manhattan freesat box and it seems that it has an unused card reader for encrypted channels

Yes, can see the picture now - thanks.

I can see the moulding for the card but not any of the electronic components required to support it. It's very common for manufacturers to use the same moulding/chassis across a range of their products - like just car manufacturers for their parts etc. - so there's probably another non-Freesat model of the same box with a card slot (aimed at overseas market).
 
I can see a pair of card locators on the inside of the front panel, but not a reader.

Most cases will have options that make them suitable for a number of models.

Why are you looking anyway ?
 
For the photo, what you see is a recycled box, the motherboard is not for that box. It does not look good, but you only have the entrance mouth for the card, there is the socket for the card reader.
Neither could a card enter a "crash" on the electrolytic capacitors and the heat sink attached to the "mouth" of the reader.
In short, you have the entrance (probably with a lid attached), but it does not have the electronic "guts" of the reader.

Por la foto, lo que se ve es una caja reciclada, la placa base no es para esa caja. No se ve bien, pero solo tienes la boca de entrada para la tarjeta, no esta el zocalo para el lector de tarjetas.
Tampoco podria entrar una tarjeta al "chocar" en lo condensadores electroliticos y el disipador de calor que esta pegado a la "boca" del lector.
Resumido, tienes la entrada (seguramente con tapa pegada), pero no tiene las "tripas" electronicas del lector.

im looking because its the old box that has bad capacitors and i saw why, its because some capacitors were bending to one side and i think it leaked because i saw some white stuff when i opened the box up
 
You need to look for bulging on capacitors. While they can also leak, sometimes components are stuck on with glue during manufacture. If in doubt - replace.

i dont use the box anyway because i have two spare sky boxes for freesat that i will use as backup incase one day my current box dies
 
To be strictly correct, Sky boxes won't get you Freesat, but Free to Air (and, if you have an operational Card, Free to View) Channels.


Freesat is the trademark of a specific Platform with conforming hardware that packages most Free to Air Channels (ie Those that pay a Fee!) and integrates them with a dedicated and unique EPG, along with other features.

Confusingly, Sky had and (possibly still have) a product called Freesat From Sky, which used the Sky EPG to package Free To Air Channels plus a small selection of otherwise Encrypted ones.

i know but i just like to call the unencrypted channels freesat because both sky freesat and bbc freesat share frequencies
 
That's because they are exactly the same Channels ......

So do all our readers now, despite the inconsistent terminology: Much easier if we stick to the generally accepted (and correct) nomenclature for things.

Whilst that may be acceptable on other forums we are a technical forum and accuracy is paramount here John.

You need to learn to call them fta (free to air) channels - of which Freesat is a subset of those channels.

If you describe something incorrectly deliberately or accidentally you will get pulled up about it by other members or the staff. Especially if they think you are doing it deliberately.
