Wanted Sony SL-C30 part needed

So ..I just got another 'blast from the past' on my bench ..
This customer has a huge betamax library he wants to transfer to Disc before it's too late..
Problem is that first I need to repair his Betamax VCR ..
Th problem is s far diagnosed to a very worn pinch roller ...thus it needs replacement.
..looking around the web I found a couple of places that specifically advertise parts for old equipment ...but no one appears to actually have one..
So ..
A longshot here but worth an ask ..
Either a brand new one (preferably) or a good condition used one..
Small enogh that this part does not have to be in the UK ..so ...
can anyone help here ?
The actual model of my Beta VCR is SL-C30UB ..but any variant of the SL-C30 will do ...also a part intended for closely related models such as SL-C20 will fit ..

On some worn out rubber pinch rollers I have had luck by just putting some heat shrink tubing on them, it's like doing a recap on a tire, it works in some cases, and sorry I never stocked up on Beta parts.

If the tubing is too slick then all you do is rough it up a bit with some 600 grit sand paper, then buff it down with some crocus cloth if its too rough.

I had a similar thing a few years back with an old Sanyo Betamax. The reel drive motor packed in making it terminal as i couldn't get one. I just ended up selling it on eBay for parts.

Already a member at PALsite great for info ...but I'v put out an BOLO on the chat forum ..and so far ...no one has replied to say they have one..
Sony support are a waste of time for parts on hardware made in the 80s..

Somewhere in my roof space I have an at that time expensive Phillips I think dvd player, one of the first on the market. it stopped working, I took it apart and thought it looks complicated, put it in a bag and into the roof. Must find it and see if it can be fixed.

Unless its replaced, it'll pretty much be the end of one of the rarer Betamax machines in this country, which is a shame all for the sake of a tube of rubber around a bearing...

Actually, nitrile fuel hose as used on small engines is pretty much the same stuff, if you could slip a bit of that onto the roller in place of the old rubber, that might save it (and provide a lucrative sideline in repair parts!!)......

The word rip off merchant comes to mind.

May be worth seeing if one off a VHS recorder would fit as the tape width is the same on VHS as it is on a Betamax. Cant see Sony completely retooling, i would probably say there is a lot of parts on a Betamax that was also used on a VHS machine.

I have been looking and have come across this. Not sure if its any good but it might fit.

A long shot.
A have a catalog from 1987 and it has pinch rollers to SL-C30-PC article number 2809.
The company seems to still be running a shop and maybe they have an old stash, who knows.
It's jec.se but their website is non-existant, no contact info.
A whois search will give you an email address [staff at jec.se] and the name of the owner, Roman Poddany probably in the retirement age by now.

They used to have a store front in Uppsala as well where I've shopped but that was a long time ago.
 
Having had no success finding a new pinch roller ..I turned my attention to restoring the original as best I could ..
The metalic surface of many tapes over the years had seriously impregnated the rubber drive surface ..
So ..the pinch roller was removed from the VCR and fully immersed in ISO Alcohol for 2 days ..then scrubbed gently with a stiff toothbrush and paper towels..
The result was not perfect ..but the improvement was dramatic..

I have so far played 5 x L-750 betamax tapes through without any sign of looping , bunching or creasing of the tape.
Customer has been warned that this is not a pukka cure ..but that it may well serve to do his transfers if treated with respect.
Hes happy and Im happy ...and £30 better off..

IPA is wonderful stuff. And no hangover!
 
A bit late I know but the original trick to restore these was to clean off the worst dirt, then immerse in a pan of very hot - not boiling - water and let to cool naturally to room temperature.
