I have had the Strong Tntsat receiver for nearly 2 years now and in the past week it has started making a buzzing noise around the psu when switched on at the rear and the revceiver goes into standby. The noise does vary when the led is illuminated or not but still buzzes in both cases.

Is the machine on the way out?

(I have tried uploading a .wmv file to the site showing what happens but this keeps on failing)
 
Check that the power supply's screws to the case are not loose.
 
I agree with Llew ............. sounds like it could be transformer laminations exploiting lack of security.
 
Invariably ferrite cores in SMPUs Tivù, but sometimes the actual windings buzz louder than normal over time. Or just poorly constructed originally.

Thank you both for your replies. I have just dicovered a side effect of the buzzing noise; when the receiver is powered on and tuned to a tv channel this disrupts the separate Freeview reception on the attatched tv. Even if the receiver is on and tuned to a channel and the lcd is simply tuned in to a DVB-T channel blocking and general distortion is suffered on DVB-T reception. This didn't happen before. I usually connect to the receiver via Slingbox whilst out of the home & when the lcd tv is being used.

Any ideas at all?
 
Forgot to include that I did open up the receiver and tightened the few screws that were accessible (there are two boards inside; one connected to the power ans the other connected to the lnb and scarts). UHF in goes directly from the rooftop aerial to the tv and does not loop through the receiver.
 
It's possible it's on it's way out, but I would suspect it's just a slightly loose winding that will be very annoying, but not affect the working of the device. (however it sounds like it might be causing it to leak RF, a ferrite core on the power lead might help...)

The windings on the core can sometimes vibrate (there is actually a hell of a lot of energy in that core!)

I took this picture inside the Strong SRT6410 but cannot seem to pinpoint where the sound is coming from; somewhere between the yellow square top centre and the coil top right.

I imagine replacing just one of those items is not possible but can replacing that particular board be done? Where could I find such a board to replace it? After reading some French websites, Strong in France is impossible to deal with even for the French so Strong France is at the bottom af any potential contact list!

Are you any further forward? I have a problem with my Strong SRT 6420 (see separate thread "Strong SRT 6420: I/R sensor problem") and have not been able to get a response from either the supplier or Strong. Technically, my receiver is still under warranty (24 months from date of purchase, according to the user manual). Same for you?
