living southern Spain all good.Should we have any concerns over spot beams in near future??
 
Oh yes.

There are already some highly focussed spot beams in service other than at 28E (which I assume is your main interest?) and there is every reason to believe that repalcement hardware for 28E will be far more controlled in repsect of minimising "overspill" than hitherto.

Apart from some generalities technical details havent been released for the new birds but I can guarantee this - ex pat psb channel reception will be more difficult than it is at the moment. :D
 
Are we talking spot beam for BBC/ITV etc FTA services, or, even worse, for encrypted services too, such as Sky?
 
Well definitely for the psb services. Your guess is as good as ours after that. We know there will be far more spotbeam capacity for the UK - all three new birds are being built specifically with them.

There are also spots for Nigeria (improving on the current Astra 2B Nigeria spot) and the Middle East (which is REALLY going to hurt the Cypriots if there is frequency re-use between that one & the UK spots!!)
 
we'll get a good idea of the power of the spot when the Irish Soarsat is launched (somewhere next year). even if FTA, only the most western parts of England will stand a chance of receiving these signals. So, once they start beaming to the UK, you know what your chances are in Spain : 0
 
Well, if the worst comes to the worst we can look into slingboxes and other internet possibilities, and actually in Spain we benefit from nearly all the TDT (freeview) channels broadcasting series, films, cartoons etc in original version as well as the local language. So we won't be completely devoid of English language programmes.

The reception and downlink characteristics of Ka band are completely different from those of Ku band so any comparisons will be meaningless.....
 
so where can I find out for certain ? or is it secret,surely cant be on a wait and see,can it
 
Of course its on a wait & see basis - if we are lucky the official satellite footprints are published 4-6 months before a launch, although SES Astra is more secretive and tend not to release theirs until a satellite is safely in orbit.

f you are wanting the Astra 2E - 2G coverage maps you will be waiting around another 2 years before the first ones are published :D And remember the new Astra 2's were ordered only fairly recently. SES will have an idea of what covereage they will be capable of but thats a commercial secret atm.

Cant you explain more Mr.Analoguesat about intention to use Ka band for transmision,this frecvency need a very accurate parabolic shape for fringe reception.

Saorsat - (the Irish Freesat system) is planning to use Ka band on 9E when they launch their system next year (if and when Eutelsat KaSat launches safely at the end of December).

There will be increasing use of Ka band in the future - bandwidth for tv broadcasts is getting constricted in the skies above Europe and Ka band allows many more channels to be carried in the same bandwidth.

I hope this bird to have FTA channels and like Astra2D today to have many hotspots in Europe and Cyprus.
 
Much of the capacity will probably be used for high speed internet to areas badly served by broadband.

Remember that due to the nature of the spotbeams it will highly restrict coverage from one area to another. Thus even if the Irish Soarsat channels are fta we wont be able to watch them here in the UK, and interesting fta channels that may appear on one of the adjacent spotbeams round your area wont be available to you.
 
About spotbeam coverage capability of today satelite its well know the coverage its not what the owner of the satelite want to be,Astra 2 D its a good example,this bird FTA channels are available in the Cyprus and the all Europe country with a resonable dish size.
When time comes and Soarsat bird on 9E start transmission i think the coverage its the same like Astra2D today.Maybee the signal its a little low but in the UK must be enough for a god reception.
 
I don't think we can really predict ............... it's going to be a case of "wait and see"

Probably not - the far western UK might get some overspill but Ka band signal drop off will be far steeper than Ku band. Also there is a northern France spotbeam that will use the same frequencies as the Irish spot which will destroy any chance of reception across much of the southern UK :D

To be honest its all guesswork at the moment - this is new technology as far as Europe is concerned - and the bird hasnt even left the ground yet. However Im certain that we will be compiling loads of reception reports as folks try for the new channels. It'll be interesting to see who can get it..
 
KA band should be reserved for broadband internet use. Otherwise demand is going to be unfulfilled and dynamic speed adjustments are going to be towards the slow side.
