Stormy Weather has moved my dish

Hi guys.

I have a Sky minidish attached to my house. The storms over the last couple of days not only knocked out all the electricity in the village for over 36 hours :-( but also blew the dish out of alignment.

I am located at O/S reference 945 281 (About 55.5N 3.7W I think)

Can you give me some advice about the angle I need to set the dish at? Or would I be better getting a specialist in?

You are by no means alone!

The chances are that only the bearing of the dish has altered, not the elevation, and probably by not very much.

You could, therefore mark its current position with tippex or similar, then relying upon the fact that the bracket is not as tight as it should be (or the dish wouldn't have moved in the storm), apply pressure to move it a few mm at a time until you get the signal back.

If you think you've gone the wrong way, set it back to the mark you made and then go the other way.

Once happy, tighten the relevant bolts a little bit.

Keep in mind that the wind direction has been predominantly westerly ...
So its a good assumption the the dish has been rotated slightly to the east ..
Working on that assumption ..
rotating it bac towar the west a fraction at a time whilst someone watches for a picture appearing on the TV ..is viable..and could save you the call out fee ..

Thanks for these replies. The dish was pointing down after the "incident" so I'll need to check both elevation and bearing - thanks also for the correct terms to use - and this could take a while. I'll give it a go and ask the "boss" to shout while I'm balancing precariously out of the bathroom window.

As a starting point for you the face of the dish will be generally vertical when in the correct position possibly slightly leaning back at the top by a couple of degrees, not on my PC so cannot post a picture atm
 
Ah, now that is unusual to lose the elevation on a sky dish -- do as Topper suggests before you even think about trying to alter the horizontal position.
 
Actually (mea culpa)whilst "Elevation" is the correct term, I used "Bearing" when most of us properly call it "Azimuth".


No matter, for this practical purpose.
 
For Scotland the dish elevation will be pointing slightly down from vertical for 28e. The last one I did in Perthshire was around 19° El.
 
I've managed to get the dish aligned and all in the howardg household is harmony. For information, the dish is facing about 2 degrees up.

Its worth marking the bolt/frames with tippex / a dab of paint etc so if it moves again you can quickly put things back to where they need to be.
