Advice Needed Suggestions for a self install satellite system

Hi

Looking into replacing my aerial system with a satellite system

For Sunderland UK
The dish
It looks like a zone 2 80cm dish would give good reception
The receiver
HD would be good, recording would be nice ? What else should I be looking at

My actual question is Can anyone suggest a self install package that is complete, of reasonable quality, that will work and wont disappoint.
If the package does not include a receiver
Recommend a receiver, doesn’t need a whole lot of bells and whistles but should give a reasonable range of functions

So, not looking for anything particularly special just something that will deliver and not disappoint
£100 would be good, £150 would be pushing it

Any suggestions please
 
It would help to know what you actually want to watch - UK TV, foreign TV if so languages etc and what sort of content are you looking for?
 
Welcome to the Forum: The answer(s) will depend to a large extent on your interests

ie UK Channels only? Or an eclectic mix of European and Middle Eastern Channels with a few other odds and sods thrown in? Mainstream Channels only, or an interest in Feeds?

Just the main stream channels, Freesat will do - whatever else is available on the same letup will be nice but not important
 
A Freesat+ pvr will be ideal for your needs. Full record capability, full epg (other receivers tend to be now & next only)

Buy one of the better brands (Humax etc) and it'll give you many years of pleasure with no ongoing subscription requirements

Is there any great difference between them, any weakness that is to much
or can you point me at a better receiver in that price range

I was looking at the complete satellite 80cm kits on Ebay they start at about £45 I was hoping someone could say if anyone of them was ok or i should look elsewhere - a specific pointer would be good
 
A BSkyB/Freesat 60cm Dish Kit can be had for around £25 and that's ample in size for Freesat use.

The new Satellites are all very very strong and the venerable Eutelsat 28A is due to be replaced in a few months, so all Channels should be available anywhere in the UK with a bit of damp string.

As for the Receivers, the two models you mention are not full PVRs (ven though they have Freetime features), but require an External Hard Disk Drive


Keep an eye on the Join Freesat site for current cheapest availability of all models.

So £25 for a Dish Kit and £129 for a decent Freesat PVR comes to £154: Time to rummage down the back of the sofa!
 
Now thats the type of advice I'm looking for

Just discovered the significance of 'single LNB' and as I will also be needing to use a satellite card in my PC I'll be needing a ? quad LNB ? a few more lines out just in case wont hurt the cost increase is a bit more than i expected the dealer you pointed me at does a quad system for £50
Unless you can point me at a quad alternative I'll go for that

Yes, I forgot you'd need a Quad: Just search eBay for Zone 2 (or 60cm) Dish Kit and no doubt there will be some at less than £50 that come with a Quad: Or you could buy the £25 kit and separately get a Quad LNB (I never pay more than about £5 for them from eBay). Mind you, you'd need cable too, which presumably the Quad kit has in abundance?

Now we're homing in on specific items, your searching is going to be more productive than me searching and reporting, but if you find something you think suitable for your needs and budget yet have doubts, we'll be happy to help further.

As a matter of interest, I'm not far South of you and my Freesat dish is a Zone 1 45cm tiddler. Does the job no problem.
 
I've just seen that Amazon offer - looks pretty good. Can't see you beating that price.
 
are the LNB mountings universal - if i buy separate will it fit
thanks for pointing me at buying separate - will save me a few bob
 
Yes, should be all compatible if you buy BSkyB related dish and LNB. The fittings have varied in detail over the years, but new bits should all fit nicely.

Problems will, however, arise if you buy a BSkyB type dish and a Standard Universal LNB or vice-versa. Just ensure you use suitable for Sky bits and all will be well.
