The Sun has unleashed its strongest flare in four years, observers say.

The eruption is a so-called X-flare, the strongest type; such flares can affect communications on Earth.

Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation emanating from a sunspot.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning, and says observers might be able to see aurorae from the northern UK.

The sun is finally waking up after the much delayed start to cycle 24, sunspot number today is 100 with a couple of big groups on the solar disk, very easy to see using just a pair of binoculars as a projection device onto white card. There were quite a few bursts of solar noise yesterday morning, I was monitoring 28MHz and a few surges around 9am peaked as high as S9.
 
Nothing out there as yet (aurora expected about three hours ago), so in the meantime, feast your eyes on these

and another eruption two days ago, the impact was due around 7am GMT.

Russian news is advising people of potential effect on health due to the magnetic disruption/fallout.
