Support Pli: they honor open source

Unlike all the other image makers out there, Pli adheres to the spirit, and licenses, of open source. The full source is available for download and compilation, but beware if you do it, it takes a looooooong time to do.

This weekend I am going to install my home compiled OpenPli image on my DM7025 and I will see how it goes. They provide images for the whole range of dreamboxes E1 and E2.

In the long run I guess that it will make their images more reliable as more people can find/fix bugs than a closed source development like Gemini and Nabilo. And more people can provide new features.

We should all support Pli in their efforts, as they are showing the true spirit of open source development, much like OSCAM (and see how well that went compared to the other cam developers, who, I am sure, will now steal the work done by the open source community).

There is quite a bit of bitterness with Nabilo out there. They are accused of ex-appropriating bits of software and then not making the source available to the open source community. I cannot know if this is true or not, but the whole EPG thing does seem to indicate that this is, at least to some extent, true. I have never, and will never, like plagiarism - give credit where credit is due. If you want to be part of the open source community, then you must share back, you cant just be a parasite.

The above does not only apply to Nabilo; it applies to all the closed source images out there.

Yes shumifan50 you'r right, personally I only use Pli images and have found them reliable and flexible.:) Good luck with your new image!

(strangely tho no sign of Oscam on Pli bluepanel?:confused:)

OSCAM is not in a stable state yet. Several problems with several cards and readers. We will have to be a bit patient. But development is proceeding at a rapid pace and for most cards there are some versions that work, it is a matter of getting a single version that supports all cards. And then there is still a problem with Smargo+ readers and pcsc.

Just finished installing my own compiled OpenPli image on a DM600 and I am quite impressed.
I have to relearn my navigation around the menus.
But have already discovered a feature I have not seen in other images:
If you go into configure recording, and click on timeshift, you can configure, like on a Sky box, how far back you would like to be able to rewind when you are watching ANY channel - default is 30 minutes. Then, while you are watching a channel, you can press 'video' and rewind/fastforward for the time you have watched the channel so far, or the time you have set during configuration, whichever is least. The downside of this is of course that the disk is used all the time, but disks are cheap (the heat might be more of a problem).

The really great thing about OpenPli is that you can always be at the bleeding edge of images as you can download and compile the latest sources on the development trunk. This might sometimes cause instability, but so long as you always save your last stable image, you can always roll back.

I am now going to try and set up Rytec XMLTV Plugin, which is downloadedable through the download panel on Pli.
Update: The plugin works as nice as Rytec's XMLTV plugin for Enigma 2.

I will let you know how I get on.

On a side note: Once you have done the first compile, compile times come down VERY significantly as only changes are downloaded/compiled and relinked. So to stay up-to-date is no problem. They also do a nightly compile available for download the next day (only latest version available).

The rewind without having to have paused on a channel is not available in Enigma2:-downt
