technomate 5200d problem -signal from galaxy 25(97w) in Yorkshire

Hello,
My satellite receiver is technomate 5200d and i want to get signal from galaxy 25 which is 97w ,but there is a problem i cannot find name of galaxy 25 on the satellite list and it wont allow me to add it manually neither
any idea?
to add that ,i have updated the receiver with the latest firmware
 
you won't get that sat anyway from yorkshire
 
Galaxy 25 is a yank bird. Its below the western horizon in the UK. Even if it wasnt its beams are firing into yankland not Europe so it would not be receivable.

You CANNOT receive it in Europe.
 
Ah I see what you have done - you have failed to take into account the elevation of the satellite - for instance for London its 12 degrees BELOW the horizon! :D :D
 
The absolute max from there is 75e 70w and only with some serious height ... even that is too much to expect normally ...

55-60 east or west is OK and most expect 45e to 45w ....

look on Lyngsat.com and see the footprint maps (listed on the right)... 75 east or west show the curve of the Earth horizon arc limit from the satellites cutting through the UK.


You also need the satellite to send a beam to the UK.. sorry but most western satellites don't- they are usually just for N C or S America. So you would also need a massive dish- c. 5-10m as a start.
 
Anyone know how to calculate how HIGH,the dish would have to be?:):)

From York that satellite is about 12 degrees below the horizon. It's about 43,000km down range. Circumference at 43,000km = 270,176km. Per degree = 750km. For 12 degrees = 9000km altitude. This should be good to within a few per cent.

Sorry, but it's very wrong. I'll get back in a while when I've worked it out.
 
Ok, I had pictured it a bit wrong. Have a look at the attached picture. This would be perfect if the sat were located at infinity. Nevertheless it should be pretty close. What do you think?

Sorry Huevos, hadn't meant for you to do an equation, I think I've got one somewhere- of sorts .. just being lazy. I think it had the distance from the equator in it too and I'm not sure if it's 12 degrees either - 93w - 75w = 18 degrees but ...... I can't even tx my phone contacts to a pc or another phone at the moment .. (it’s their '*&% software:mad:)

It depends where you are located. -12º was for York (54N, 1W) as the post came from Yorkshire. If you were on the equator at the prime meridian at would be 15.5º.
 
There you go linux44 - all you need to do is buy a house on top of a 122km tall mountain. :D

I dont remember seeing such a thing last time I was down in the Yorkshire area so I suspect you are going to be out of luck.

I suppose you could put a mast up, although you would need to put collision beacons on it and notify air traffic control of a potential hazard to aircraft! :-rofl2

where are those figures from exactly ... York's west cut off is 75w.. isn't that what you mean..




anyway..

for this it is not much use as we know it's too far, but closer and it's useful re: height above sea level versus where it should cut off as all the footprint maps are technically for sea level…. in the UK that's any sats c. 70- 75e or 75w then a reliable equation might be handy from a given location/height above sea level.
 
Well, as dishpointer is linked to GoogleEarth, it would be useful if that correlated a reference of height above sea level to its calculation for dish elevation. However, unless you lived at the top of a very tall mountain, it really wouldn't make that much difference!!

There are quite a few online calculators. 75W is 0.5º above the horizon. 97W is 12º below. If you went 22º west but remained at 54N it would appear on the horizon. Anyway it's obvious it can't be seen from the UK as it is located over the Pacific ocean.
 
Actually, having played around with dishpointer for the last 30 minutes all linux44 has to do is move to Teno. It's a small town on the western coast of Tenerife. Any further east and 97W goes below the horizon!

Not a very practical solution but a very pleasant place from which to capture sats!!
