technomate 5200d problem -signal from galaxy 25(97w) in Yorkshire

After some recent problems a friend of mine was having with a motorised satellite dish and obstructions, someone suggested (jokingly of course!) that one could mount the dish on an airship and ensure the dish is clear of such tiresome obstructions. I guess this could work to get 97W from our neck of the woods too ;) Not sure if the losses in 122-odd km of CT125 would get you anything - might need some in-line amplifiers :-rofl2

One handy thing to note using Dishpointer - if the line turns red, the satellite isn't visible from where you are.

no.... I was..

...actually... the calculation has to have the calc for eli in it, not relying on another to calc each sat's eli. Dishpointer's not 100%, it has bugs and clearly doesn't include height above sea level, that's quite an omission really, which means that it's elevation calcs are all inaccurate to a %... unless it's at sea level.. Got one somewhere, it's on a spreadsheet on an old disc somewhere.

That's true but statistically unimportant. Let's look at Mount Everest as an example as it is the highest perch on the planet. From Everest at sea level Eutelsat W3A (7E) is at 0.0º elevation and 265.3º azimuth. If you look at the same satellite from the peak of the mountain (8848 metres) that changes to -0.012º elevation and 265.3º azimuth.

One interesting point this shows is that the higher above sea level the observer is the lower the satellite is in the sky.

I just used rough coordinates (28N, 87E), but if you go to dish pointer and use "Mount Everest" for the location it comes up with 0.2º elevation and 265.2 azimuth. Either way the difference in pointing between sea level and the peak is 0.012º of elevation.
 
It is not reliable doing that . .as soon as you move the position to get a nearby sea level point, you will alter the elevation. This is only really useful at around 60 - 80 degrees east or west and you have to allow for anything on the horizon at the other end too... all quite messy, and I can imagine digging up an old excel file on an old HD ... and it being flawed anyway.
