And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

If it has an internal cooling fan then yes it could very well be the fan it's self, a good cooling fan of the same size from a PC supply house would fix that problem, but be sure to get one with a low DbA rating, the lower this number the quieter it will be.

If its out of warranty, take the lid off off and listen to where the noise is coming from. Be careful though with any exposed 240V mains, it hurts a lot when touched.

Strange, didn't realise there was a fan in the 5402.

Quite possibly - I run a school network of 300 computers and when the bearings go on the case cooling fans they make a horrible noise at bootup. (Once the bearings warm up they go quiet again so Ive left them :D)

I'd suggest to turn the fan off: -

Press Menu > Enter pin as 0000
Select System Settings > Front display settings.
Set Fan control to 'off', to switch off the fan.

I have the same problem with the box I just received.. very noisy indeed.. thinking about sending it back as I looked through the cam slot and some of the capacitors are leaning over.. also the warrenty seal was broken so I'm thinking someone else received the box and opened it to check what the noise was... not happy with it anyway.

Well I have sent the noisy box back and got another one elsewhere and it works great. No noise fromt the fan and the capacitors all look in good upstanding shape. The shop I returned the faulty box to tried to make out the capacitors were meant to be leaning right over.. duh! The volume also seems to be level on HD/SD channels whereas the old box the HD was far louder even in dolby spdif which meant having to keep turning volume up and down.

Yeah I meant HD channels were far louder than SD channels.. is that the same problem you had?

Even with both HD/SD channels set to high the HD channels were quite a lot louder than the SD channels.. I think the spdif option wasnt working on the box.

I will update later with the patch as that fixes the default level to high I think

There is a fan as I was shown one with the lid off at Technomate as part of their sales pitch. Sounds like more of con than a pro if you excuse the pun...:D

We had an old Techmate TM5200 D for many years worked fine with moveable satellite dish system. No HD so decided to upgrade to TM5402HD.
This has many nice features and has been installed no problem. Unfortunately my dear Wife is terribly bothered by the high pitched hissing noise that the box produces sometimes intermittently and sometimes continuously. My hearing is not as acute so I can put up with it but she has made me go back to the old box because she cannot remain in the sitting room when this hissing noise is present.
I see from the posts that there may be an epidemic fault on the fans ?
I also see there has been a patch that can turn off the fan.
We cannot return the box since our Aerial man sold it to us as a second user box but otherwise "brand new"

Is there a fix for this or do I have to buy another brand new one!

Pop the top off & see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. If it is a fan then you can replace it with a same sized computer fan sourced cheaply from ebay or similar.

Thanks I will try that but is there a chance that this noise is NOT the fan?
