My Technomate, which I bought second hand, has just been set up with a dual LNB. It worked OK in the earlier part of the day although a lot of channels said "No video/audio", despite having a reasonably strong signal.

I then switched it off via the remote control before going out, and on my return I cannot get it to switch on at all. There is however some black video signal which stops my TV from saying "No signal", so something must be happening. However the display on the front is black, no life seen anywhere. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in again, but it is still not lighting up on the front and still not putting out any signal except black video output. None of the buttons on the front do anything.

I would suspect a short circuit at one of the F connectors, probably at the LNB end.

Unplug the box before remaking the connections ensuring there are no stray wisps if copper etc.

Hopefully the TM has short circuit protection so all should be well when you reboot.

OK Lazarus, thank you for your reply. I've checked the LNB connector where it goes into the back of the receiver, and there were no problems there. However the box still does not switch on at all. It still gives a black video signal (which my TV reports as NTSC!), but no green LEDs light up on the case front, and none of the buttons do anything. Is my system a goner?

Its not in an enclosed space is it? If its been overheating all sorts of odd effects can happen.

It's not overheating and has plenty of ventilation. I just can't get it to switch on. It worked in the afternoon although it was slow to boot. Now it is completely inert.

The dodgy connector will probably be at the LNB end of the cable.

Once properly made off, your Receiver should be ok.

The installation engineer had the LNB working and giving good test readings on a meter. The TM5400 was then wired up, and many channels were coming through nice and clear from both Eutelsat (13E) and Astra (19E). There was no problem until I switched the receiver off and went out to do some shopping.

If it was a short at the LNB, I'd have thought it would have caused problems right away.

I would suspect the PSU has gone, check for bulging caps.

Hmmm... thanks, but that kind of work is a bit beyond me. It may be that I need to buy another receiver. That one was second hand, for £26 on ebay. I could probably do better with a 5402 as it has an HDMI port. As long as the same thing doesn't happen again.

Yup could well be a duff power supply. Pop the top off and have a good look round the capacitors for bulging tops.

I'm afraid I can do no more with it, so I have taken the plunge and bought a replacement unit, a TM5402 with HDMI. I'm just praying it doesn't go the same way!
