I was thinking of buying the DM8000 but the price is crazy and even if i can afford it i don't want to pay for overpriced products.

So i have a problem now choosing Linux receiver for HDTV, the most important factor for me is the tuner, it should be good with weak signals, the rest is not that important.

There is not much choice right now, i have to choose between:

IPBOX9000
AZBOX PREMIUM
QBOX

I've got the IPBox 9000. I havent had much time to play with it yet, but so far it seems like a good box. My only grumble about it would be that with the DGS (Default) software, it can be a little slow changing channels and going through menus.

The Enigma2 images seem to perform quickly enough, though they are not that stable overall. (yet)

I cant really comment on tuner sensitivity because I haven't really checked yet. I do pick up the MBC beam on 26E which is marginal reception here, but I could pick that up with the DM600 too.

Why not buy a Dreambox 800HD ?
If not the QboxHD is looking great, although not ready for a novice user.
I'm beta testing it.
Also the Coolstream looks good to me, although that a unit I don't have (yet :-) )

It really depends on what is more important to you. For picture quality with upscaled SD and HD, I love my Cuberevo (ipbox9000). Not seen a sat receiver produce such good picture quality. The hardware is top notch but the software from DGS is a little lacking.

But if you are looking for good software support and plenty of third party support, then a dreambox might be your answer. As for quality, I can't say as I've not owned one.

I still think the Cuberevo probably wins with value for money vs quality, but I'm sure some would argue.

Happy with my Cuberevo 3000HD, use the NLB images, works well, excellent picture quality, also has a good built in video player.

The IPBOX can't handle 4:2:2 feeds right?

I'm also looking at Linux HD receivers.

The main features I would like are:-
- streaming to PCs with a good web interface
- use network storage (NAS server)
- 7 day EPG for freeview
- DVB-T and DVB-S2
- play multiple video file formats and ripped DVDs
- DVD/Blueray player (but not essential)

I would definitely pick the DB 8000 if they were all the same price - I have been happy with a 7020. Is there a problem not having HDMI in the DB8000 especially if hooking up to a HDMI AV amp?

Has anyone looked at the Kathrein 922?

The various images under development for the DB make it still seem the best long term bet (if you can get over the initial cost).

I am also interested in this.
I currently have a Dreambox 7020s with Irdeto and Viaccess cards.

I am looking for an HD receiver with at least 2 card slots and one CA
but without the excessive cost of the DB8000 PVR

Also there is now an AB IPBox 9900HD Plus, I'm not sure what it adds to the 9000

Be nice if we could find some reviews of these alternatives to the DB8000.

It's really hard as nobody has had all of them in a row and made a comparison. I am playing with the Qboxhd, on paper possibly the best alternative to the 8000, but the software is not fully developed yet. All these boxes are somewhat experimental, and most of them are still under development (software). This is going to be hard to find the "best".

Dream7020 and AZ Elite and a few DM800

I have a few DM (500 and 7020) and also an AZ box.

For the common viewer the AZ (if You need HD) is the best if You have ab eye on the pricetag.

My version(Elite) works fine, good HD picture and plays any video You care to run. The soft is far away from Ver. 1 but it works for normal viewing.
Multicas runs CCC but no F-line.

It´s a great decoder, plenty of things coming so I can recommend it.

If you want the best receiver today look for the ones with STV0903 demodulator inside which Sharp and i beleive Samsung uses in their tuners.

They are like unbeleivable, typical 6db noise factor compared to 10db on the others like Conexant CX24116, the phase noise is unbeleivable as well compared to the competition.

I had this STV0903 in my IPBOX9000HD and i could get Astra 2D verticals here 24/7, even my old Pace 2600C1 couldn't keep up with it.

I had to change the STV0903 tuners in my IPBOX for the modules with CX24116 and the performance is like night and day.
, however STV0903 modules does not work with Enigma2 for IPBOX, that's why i changed tuners.

Here you can see the specs: _http://www.sharpsme.com/Page.aspx/europe/en/dec6052c-676f-45e8-ad9a-9eed20b4a70a

I hear the VU+ Duo is being compared to the DM8000 - ok it doesnt have all the tuner options but its meant to be very nice. Maybe I am just being a bit biased as mine is coming next week :)
