Morning Everyone.

Now that BADR C-Band has been beaten.

Let’s move on to the next and even more impossible project. (Insert Dr. Evil laugh here)

Why do I want BADR Ku so bad? Well, the MBc channels look very interesting, as well as some of the other offered on there.

For me to receive Badr Ku band here in South Africa ( 25`40`32 S 28`14`5 E ),well one would basically require a miracle ,or perhaps not?

So lets look at the Coverage map that comes down Africa the furthest.

From what I can see, it looks to me like this one.

http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/maps/badr4_bss.html

Ok, so this is where things get difficult.

For everyone who has given some pointers on the LNB`s and everything else.Thank You very much.Perhaps I can gain a little from a better LNB,but I don’t think it will be worth the cost.

You all know what I have by now, but let me list it anyway.

Metabox 3 STB,with a few Encryptions programmed in.
3m KTI Prime Focus Mesh. Ku Band Gain off at least 47.9 DBI @ 12.20 GHZ
Gospell 55db 0.3db LNB
Motorised Bracket with a Superjack motor.

As soon as it gets warmer than 2deg C here, I`ll start having a look.(Hopefully the weekend)

Please chime in! :):)

Don't give up so easily :) Look at my thread "Could you build a killer dish".

Change the KTI dish to something else in the equation, it is the weakest link in the chain.

The weakest link?
Hmmm,i just paid quite a bit (ok,ok,allot) for it.

Is there really a dish that is (within the normal guys reach) to buy that is better?

So,does anyone think it is possible at all to recive Ku band if your that far out of the footprint?

You have one of the best mesh dishes out there.

Changing to a solid aluminium dish would involve higher cost and weight for you.

If i remember correctly a really good 3.1m mesh dish equals a 2.4m solid dish in performance.

The holy grail this time is Ku band, much of it at the higher frequencies in the band.

http://www.lyngsat.com/badr4.html

Mesh has no defined figures at Ku band, the manufacturer will give all sorts of exclusions to the gain figure on paper.

Distortion of approx 2mm from the theoretical parabola on the surface gives a lower s/n ratio.

Mesh flexes through weight, temperature and wind, Ku band reception always suffers first.

Very informative,thanks!

So if they say 47dbi for the high end of Ku band, what will the actual gain then be?Is there anyway to find this out?

Good mesh antenna don't flex like the old Winegard Pinnacle or Paraclipse Classic, just look at the hurricane that went over Florida and NASA and you can see what dishes still was operational, the Paraclipse.

Wind rejection is the good thing about mesh dishes as the wind can go much higher before it makes the same force impact compared to a solid dish.

Also mesh dishes are always lighter and therefore don't have the problem with weight as solid dishes has.

Yes temperature in cold climates can be problem for the mesh expanding, but the problem is there with solid aluminium dishes as well that warps instead.

Cheap mesh dishes have the problems that the mesh pops out from the rail during high winds, that is not a problem with Paraclipse or the Winegards.

Not to mention the old Birdviews that is considered to be the best mesh dishes ever made.

KTI is ranked among the top 5 mesh manufacturers, its a good mesh dish.

A good 3 m solid dish have 49dBi at 11.3GHz.

So your 47dBi is normal as a solid 2.4m dish has a gain of about 46.5dBi at 11.3GHz.

Mesh has another disadvantage of allowing unwanted signal in from the otherside of the feed, (and increases with frequency).
Pointing towards Badr means your feed is open to all signals above, and below the dish rim.

Is it windy where you are (Pretoria ?)
On a hill ?
What kind of material is under the dish ?
Are there any microwave transmitters or military establishments nearby ?

Normally the wind speed is below 20km/h here, and very rarely it goes above it.

Yes, I stay in Pretoria.

I live in a well populated neighborhood, flat on the ground. No hills for at least 50km towards North.
As far as I remember, the closest transmitter is about 5km away, and that is for Cell phone transmission. There is no other Military, or Microwave towers nearby.

The only thing that could create some interference, is the airport. The airport is some 3km away, and is of small nature, for smaller Twin engined planes. They operate on the FM band for communication.Hehe,I listen to them every other day.

The nice thing about BADR is that the elevation angle is very high. (Close to 60 Deg)
So the noise radiated from nearby trees, the ground or perhaps a roof is not really a problem. The closest object to the dish, will be the wall. It is roughly 1 meter below the dish. The roof is tile, and not steel/Zinc (thank goodness for that)

Here is a Sat photo of my house.

Gives some idea of what the terrain looks like. The red Dot is where my dish is situated.
