Done loads of reading on the best sat receiver and it gets more confusing by the day. A. Different reviewers give different views on the same box. B. Some have software blind scan and others hardware blind scan. C. Soldered in place tuners or plug in, plug in easier to replace as technology progresses, so I have read. D. Support over time, some give great support but others are none to good. Then its the price.... so I felt it best to ignore the cost, within reason and get what appears to be the best. And the winner is................I haven't a clue.

Since an stb can be used by people with varying levels of understanding and program watching desires, you will get differing reviews, e.g. a feed hunter will love an stb that would confuse the average Joe

No point ignoring the cost - that should be your STARTING point!.

The Vu+ receivers are getting good reviews atm.

No point trying to future proof too much - if you get 4 or 5 years out of a receiver its served you well.

Ive got an old 7020 which was the dogs danglies when I bought it, but technology has passed it by, (no HD for starters) and Im looking to replace it now.

If you want Blindscan you wont got far wrong with the ET9000, ET5000 ( both hardware blindscan) or the VU+ Uno (software blindscan, not yet implemented in ViX, but it other images).

Read some reviews comparing Clarke Tech ET9000 with Vu+ and the ET9000 appears to be slightly better. Looks like the one.

The Clarke-Tech version is OEM, Xtrend is ODM. Both are 100% identical, but basically Xrtend is the Original design manufacturer. Also don't be fooled by retailers selling the Clarke-Tech ET9100 as replacing the Et9000 as this is NOT the case, its just been re-branded by Clarke-Tech and you'll pay more just to have 9100 printed on the front. Go for the Xtrend ET9000 ;)

I was talking to an aquaintance at the local builders merchants today and happened to mention I had reinstalled my sat dish. He was working a few doors down and saw me remove it a while back. On saying I was looking at a new receiver he suggested I got a model with the best support as he did when buying expensive site equipment. "No use buying some machinery if its hard to get spares when required. Making me think.

Not quite sure what you mean by the above, but VU+ or Xtrend spares are not any harder to get than Dreambox spares. In all honesty, the amount of faulty Xtrend or VU's we've had back can be counted in one had ;)

I was not thinking about hardware faults but regarding support for patches etc. Mind you, you have to be careful what you read on the web. Saw a bit about Clarke Tech is this the end.

In the coming months there's going to be some rather exciting new thing's coming to the ET-series, that's all I can say at this stage.

Fair enough. I am interested in the ET 9000HD and will probaly settle for that. but maybe I can hang on a while and see if anything exciting happens.

Vu+ Uno is hardware blindscan (6 minutes to scan a satellite wouldn't be possible with software blindscan). The bit missing in some images is just the driver to control the hardware.
