Sky must have incurred enormous costs as a result of its policy of giving away digital satellite systems (with free installation). The money has to be recouped and anyone who wants more than the free channels will experience the downside of such extravagance (hefty subscription charges).
I feel that Sky tends towards a policy of blackmail - you either take the package they want you to have or you get nothing. You can't just choose one or more individual channels and pay a budget price. I think Sky has a policy of providing minimum information about packages, people have to phone up and will then have to deal with a professional salesperson who may try to sell them the most expensive package.
If you don't like Sky, the solution is to go multi satellite.
