Over the last week I have been very busy, this due to many local PC user's with Yahoo E-mail accounts hit with ransomware.

I think they are attacking Yahoo accounts only.

This ransomware will pop up on the screen (with sound, Ding, Ding, Ding, and keep on going) and tell you that you have a virus, it will also disable your mouse and keyboard, this makes some people call the phone number on the popup, this is a bad idea as they will want a credit card number to help fix the problem, and it may cost you up to $250.(US)

If you have a Yahoo E-mail account and have NOT been hit by this yet, then I highly suggest you down load a program called "Super Anti Spyware" (it's free) and run a full scan, and also a Malware scan and I would do so in safe mode.

Not all AV programs will detect this type of ransomware, and I highly suggest you run a spy sweep daily if you check your Yahoo E-mail account everyday.

Now if this virus message pops up the first thing to do is hold the power button down for about ten seconds and re start the computer in safe mode and run a full spy sweep and malware scan, if you do not know how to do this then contact your local PC tech and have them do the job.

Ahhh thanks for reminding me, you should check your backups just like any PC, a trojan file could be hiding there also.

@Terryl

Out of interest, is the ransomware very difficult to remove ?

It has never happened to me or any family (yet thankfully), I make regular back up's but if this happened to me I would be pretty lost

Well you have to do a Spy or Malware scan in safe mode, (the best way to find it) and if possible for the type of scan your doing you should look for what is called a Rootkit.
Code:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit

This may take a while, on one computer I did took 9.6 hours, (had lots and lots of files) as it is a very deep scan of your hard drive.

Doing one right now on another PC and its at the 6 hour mark and climbing.
