I have a Canon Rebel XD350 camera, very basic but idiotproof, with a thread underneath that should fit on a stand/

Does it have a name or is it mentioned in specification by pitch/screw type only ?

I have a Manfrotto tripod here (actually it's the parent company's gimbal version from Vinten - Pro 5)

This has a larger screw fitment in the removeable cartridge, probably to fit a much larger camera.

If somebody has the right description for it I would like to know what to ask Vinten Group in order to get the smaller version that fits in the sliding part.

There are 2 "standard sizes" of tripod threads - see here - and your Manfrotto appears to have the larger one! There are (probably!) adapters available - try ebay &/or Amazon!
PS: the Canon "Rebel" range was/is sold in N.America, not Europe where those cameras had/have different names! - so you probably didn't buy yours in the UK :ph34r:
PPS: I have a couple of Canon P&S cameras - bought in the UK - but my main cameras are Pentax DSLRs - yeah!:)

Thanks for the info. The camera certainly came from the UK, and the manual within the bundle confirms the name 'Rebel' as well as on the front of the camera. Ah, it's XT rather than XD though.

Various sites mention an adapter to change from one thread to another, though there is no hint as to where these are supplied, The Vinten cartridge is deeper than on other tripods, with a dedicated groove in the aluminium (and blanked off insert at one end), a screw from another tripod here isn't long enough to fit and secure the camera.

Camera sounds like a "grey import"!

Tripod adaptor - need some pictures - but try some of these from ebay
 
The dimensions are given further down the page after the photographs. The threaded length is 5mm and the unthreaded length under the head is 6mm.

I fear the minimum non threaded length is nearer 9mm. This is the 3/8 screw.15330360835021024614736.webp
 
Might it not be easier to change the quick release plate for a similar but thinner item - there are many such plates on ebay/Amazon- ?
 
Possibly, though the camera screw is already a quick release item on the plate, unplug the rubber stop and it comes out.

What is slightly odd is the manual for the Pro-5 head shows a neat retaining place for the screws (Page 7), on mine however there is no such hiding spot. Perhaps this is the non 'Plus' version

Can the Vinten Pro head take an "ARCASwiss"-compatible plate (the Vinten plate looks similar to that but pdf didn't say it could - possibly for "commercial reasons")? if so there are many on the market (and I have quite a few, as well as various types of adapters!).

If you are going to be over in this area in the next few days, drop me a PM and then drop in here and we can see if what I have would fit the bill?
 
Thank you, I will organise my movements to suit.

I popped down to the local shop (Walton Cameras) earlier, they haven't seen an adapter for Vinten/Manfrotto for years.

I have a spare 3/8" screw for this mount if anyone wants a straight swop for a 1/4"
 
Been reading a bit more about the Manfrotto/Vinten tripods issues on a photo forum, and am now thinking that, overall, it would be quicker, cheaper and better in the long run to get a cheap tripod head with an arca-swiss compatible head as you then have a huge choice of "bits and pieces" onto which to mount the camera onto the existing tripod.
