I am trying to find answers to my question but do NOT want to discuss pay schemes etc. i just want to know the following:

I am currently a Sky user and am debating whether to move over to the 800hd box. I have contacted someone who fits the dishes boxes etc, but my questions are:
1. how easy is it to buy direct all components needed (are there cheaper places to buy);
2. how easy is it to fit and install the system;
3. is it worth doing in the long run;

Sorry to be such a noob but my wife and i dont get out much so the tv is our little sanctuary at the moment and it feels like quitting Sky would be like having my arm chopped off!!

Well if you are already paying for sky and enjoy it and can afford it then keep it as a DM8000 will not give you sky without a subscription or a card share

Ok - in general:

If you are new to the satellite hobby the Dreambox / linux receivers are not particularly friendly to set up or use. You will be spending hours if not days and weeks scratching your head if you want to play with the more advanced features and whilst you can take them out of the box and set them up for one satellite reasonably easily you wont get anywhere near the best out of them unless you start tinkering......

If you want a proper epg then stick with the sky box - none sky receivers only have now & next unless you can get a plugin working for them (see warning about advanced features mentioned above!)

Remember they are advanced hobby machines not really suitable for newbies to the hobby.

A dish is fairly easy to set up if you have time to tinker. It can take 10 minutes to get your first signal lock. Or it can takes days.....

Only you can decide if its worth it but be warned there are n umerous cases of folks being bitterly disappointed with them as they had unrealistic expectations of the box.

Put simply - can you be bothered with the weeks of hassle??

If not - forget it.

If yes then we will help you as much as we can but dont expect to have your hand held - theres only one way to get to know how these babies work under the bonnet and thats to tinker with it, break it and learn how to fix it! :D

Thanks analoguesat

Sorry about earlier i wasnt intentionally trying to break the rules ive just been doing so much research on this issue i wondered if people were able to discuss their systems cost etc.

anyway i am quite technically minded and i feel comfortable using the net and other 'computer related activities' id find the setting up part a nice challenge i just wanted to know if its worth in ways such as do you get decent movies, sports and english speaking programs.

i dont think i have any expectations from the box only stories that i have heard on forums such as this and people i have spoken to. as long as it provides enough english speaking channels that will satisfy a nights tv watching then i would be happy.

thanks again for your help on this and as i said earlier sorry for the noob questions!!

Had my DM800 Clone about 20 months now, really given sterling service, done everything possible to cock it up.

Popped in a Ferrari Sim today, managed to goose it up again 'O'-red

Anyhoo, after 3 hours flashing, dreamup, cables out of drawers and the likes, its up and running again, new image, better EPG and even added an External Sata for good measure.

Roll on the Footy and NFL seasons, the Recliner is set, the Fridge is full, bring on Winter :p

Had my clone now for almost a year now,well worth the money.If you need any help setting up etc just pm me as I'm from North Manchester

Oily im in whitefield so id appreciate the help however i cant find how to pm you?

You will probably find cant at the moment - you havent been a member long enough. We had a major problem with spammers pm'ing members a while back so had to restrict the privileges to longer established members with a certain number of posts.

Anyway thats not how a forum is supposed to run. Someone asks questions and they are answered on the forum, then everyone benefits from the info supplied. :)

Ah,your just down the road from me,email me on email address removed - Admin

Magic thanks oily, and thanks to everyone else for their comments i really appreciate the help. My mind is now made up and i will be taking the plunge!! Roll on 3pm footy!
