Afternoon all

Just got that s/h ACER X275 I ordered for use as a HTPC in the lounge, and it comes with a 500GB disk, WIN 7 Pro 64 bit and preinstalled MSOffice 2010 H&B (£29 installed by the supplier - could not pass that up!). However the disk has only has 1 partition, and I want to repartition it into 3 (C:\, D:\, E:\) partitions as I normally do, and then move MSOffice to the 2nd one.

Partitioning is no problem in itself as I already have older tools (Acronis Disk Director 11, and several free ones like Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15) which can do that, but they don't include the facility to migrate installed programmes from one partition to another and keep all the internal links working. However I know that there are s/w tools that can do that, but I haven't recently, if ever, used any of those.

Therefore I'm hoping that someone here can give some suitable suggestions - preferably free s/w, of course!

Thanks in advance

Edited:

Just found out that the supplier, which is an MS Registered Refurbisher, included the MSOffice 2010 H&B Product Key in their paperwork, and as I already have a full (not OEM) copy of the s/w disks, I wondering if I can simply partition the disk and install Office on the 2nd partition from my disks and then activate that with the Product Key supplied with the m/c?

That would be much simpler/quicker/less risky than migrating it from C:\ to D:\ - even so, I would still appreciate some pointers on migration s/w that will work from one partition to another and/as opposed to from one disk to another.

You may be able to "upgrade" the windows 7 key to a ten key.

I did when I bought a second hand dell, well I then downloaded the 10 pro ISO and burned to disk, proceeded with a fresh install of ten.

During the setup you get a change to format the drives to your liking.

It's a bit of a pain reinstalling, but in my opinion it's the best way of starting a "new" computer.

Thx but too late now for the free upgrade to W10 - so that would be expensive (more than the X275 cost - just over £100 with Office installed!)

Only just fired the m/c up for the first time and now deciding what to do - probably a malware/virus scan and then partition the disk before I get to the "moving" stage.

Think I've now come across several "moving applications" - "Application Mover" ($20 for 32bit & 64bit versions) and SymMover (free'ish) - be interested to see if anyone else has tried them.

You can still get the free upgrade but via a link

Take a look at this:-

OH, I had forgotten about that "work-around" - Oh dear, my eyesight is so poor! (well, without specs it, actually is;)).

OTOH: might do that after the 60 day warranty period expires - still not fully moved all the PCs over to W10 from W7 - this one would make 3 of each.

Cheers

Out of interest, what HTPC software are you using? I'm a long time user of NextPVR (formerly GBPVR), with Kodi as an addition.

The box only arrived yesterday and so still just getting the basics sorted out - have only run a virus/malware scan ("just in case") and partitioned the disk, but the next step is to shift OFFICE onto a secondary partition, and that was the issue I raised in this thread. However, have now just purchased (I hope!) "Application Mover" over the net but still waiting for the download link & licence No. to arrive - hopefully later today (but if not then I may be waiting a few days in the circumstances).

Will get to the HTPC stuff in due course - probably after Xmas as I also bought a graphics card but it came without a 1/2 height plate (my fault, didn't check the product spec carefully enough) and so I'm now waiting for one of those, and still need a cheapish DVS-2 tuner card (asked in another thread, but no real progress in choosing one so far). So the HTPC s/w stuff is still some way off.

Just installed & run Application Mover on the PC and it seemed to work pretty well in rapidly shifting almost all the OFFICE file structure to another drive quite quickly. Did throw a couple of error messages about EXCEL but they proved to be "red herrings", and it did leave a handful of files in the C:\Programs\Microsoft Office folder, but I think they need to be there.

After that, WORD, EXCEL etc., appear to work fine - so that's another issue sorted.

4 hours later shows " working on upgrades " 32%, 2.4 Mbps download, oh the joys of rural life:-ohcrap

Regards
As soon as you have finally completed that , then immediately download and run something like O&O Shutup10 and turn off all the W10 spying!

Many thanks for that - knew it could be done but never bothered to follow it up to establish where I could easily get those downloads. Will make sure I can get to that page easily if I need it in future (hopefully not!).
