total newbie please help

My Satellite Setup
hotbird 13e
My Location
derby, uk
I know there are lots of posts for new setups but my understanding of satellite is really bad! I want to setup a free to air system for my mother-in-law. She likes to watch Arabic TV especially MBC (Lebanese channels).
I understand Arabsat & Hotbird show some of these channels...so the question is 'how do I set this up and what do I need to buy?'
She currently has an old sky satellite receiver and 2 rather large sky dishes. She has a viewing card which gives her a few extra channels you don't get on freeview and one of these magic eye tools that lets her control Sky in 2 rooms.
Really appreciate your help

Welcome to the Forum.:)

There are quite a few channels originating from Lebanon _http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/Lebanon.html, the one on Hotbird is an easy catch, a realigned Sky minidish will do the job, but for the MBC channels on Arabsat, a much larger dish will be required, certainly better than 1m in Derby.

thanks. sorry what does 'ofr the mbc channels on arabsat' mean? Can I use her old sky dish instead of minidish for hotbird? Also, do you know what receiver I would need? and any other equipment? thanks again

It means my fingers are not completely controlled by my brain, it was a typo, supposed to be "for". :-rofl2

Yes, pretty much any dish will be OK for Hotbird as will any modern digital receiver.

sorry just a few more q's...Can you suggest a cheap receiver? Will she still get sky channels if the dish is moved to pickup hotbird? do i need any other equipment? I read about some lnb thing?? thanks

No, if this is in use then not once the dish has been realigned to 13e. If you want both then an 80cm with an LNb offset bracket.

Can I use any sattelite receiver?? Does it need something specific? Will any LNB offset bracket work? thanks

Yes any DVB satellite receiver. The offset bracket will work with a suitable sized dish if you want both 13e and 28e.

If you want to keep it really simple, you could just install a 2nd dish for hotbird, a Sky one would do.
